I hopped into Sabrina's car, and she greeted me with a cheerful "Good morning, love." Her smile brightened up the whole car.

"Hey Sab," I replied, trying to sound casual. But my mind was preoccupied with the weight of the truth about my parents' involvement in the mafia.

Sabrina couldn't contain her excitement, going on about how it was the last day of school before summer break. Meanwhile, all I could think about was the secret burden I carried.

The argument with my parents echoed in my mind, their silence about important matters, and the hurtful things my mom had said. And then there was that name I overheard, "Matteo Petrova."

Sabrina's face turned to shock as I mentioned it. "Valentina, are you kidding me? The last name Petrova doesn't ring a bell?" she exclaimed.

Suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Petrova, the most dangerous mafia gang of them all. "Oh, fuck," I muttered under my breath.

My heart raced as I absorbed this newfound information. How deeply were my parents involved with the Petrova family? What did it mean for my safety? These questions swirled in my mind, threatening to consume me.

"We can talk about this later," Sabrina said, trying to reassure me as we pulled up to school. I unbuckled my seatbelt, and Sabrina unlocked the door. Stepping out of the car, I walked beside Sabrina, leaning on her for support.

"Hey, guys!" Jackson called out, his grip on Sabrina revealing his feelings for her. Jackson had been our good friend for years, but since seventh grade, it was clear he had developed deeper feelings for Sabrina.

Sabrina acknowledged him with a friendly smile. "Hey, Jax," she said, and I could see the spark in his eyes when she said his name. I bid Sabrina and Jackson goodbye, making my way to my first class, disappointed that Sabrina wasn't in the same class as me.

I walked into the classroom and took my seat next to Logan. Logan is also one of Sabrina's and my good friends. Logan was incredibly adorable with his charming dimples when he smiled, and those mesmerizing blue eyes.

"Hey cupcake!" Logan exclaimed joyfully that's the nickname he has given me since the sixth grade. "Hi Logan," I replied with a hint of dryness. I couldn't stop thinking about the Petrova family. Why was their presence affecting me so deeply?

"Hey, are you okay?" Logan asked, his voice filled with concern. "Yeah, I'm fine," I said, avoiding eye contact.

"Valentina, I know something's wrong. Just tell me," he pleaded. But this reason seemed trivial, and I was sure Logan would find it silly.

Logan was one of the few who knew about my parents involvement in the mafia, along with Sabrina and Jackson. "I didn't get enough sleep last night, and I have a terrible headache!" I lied.

The school day dragged on without anything exciting happening, and finally, the bell rang, signalling it was time to go home. Sabrina dropped me off at home, as I entered, finding my mom cooking something in the kitchen.
