When the taxi arrived to Sabrina's house, I climbed in and gave the driver my address. The ride felt too short, and soon I was standing in the familiar doorway of my house.

I sat on the couch and put a show on trying to distract myself.

I heard the front door open. As soon as my parents walked through the door, my mother's eyes immediately narrowed, zeroing in on the bruises on my face. "Valentina, what have you done to yourself?" she snapped, her voice sharp and full of disapproval.

I bit back a sigh, trying to keep my tone neutral. "It's nothing, mamá. Just an accident."

My dad, on the other hand, stepped closer with concern etched on his face. He gently lifted my chin to get a better look at the bruises. "Valentina, esto no es nada," he murmured, his voice soft. "¿Qué te pasó? ¿Por qué no me lo dijiste?"

(Valentina, esto no es nada - Valentina this isn't nothing)

(Qué te pasó? Por qué no me lo dijiste? - what happened to you? Why didn't you tell me?)

I hated lying to him, but there was no way I could tell him the truth. "I... I just tripped, Papá. It's no big deal. I fell while I was out walking."

He frowned, clearly not buying it, but didn't push me. "Tienes que tener más cuidado, mija. No quiero verte lastimada así."

(Tienes que tener más cuidado, mija. No quiero verte lastimada así. - you have to be more careful, darling. I don't want to see you hurt like that)

"I know, Papá. I'll be more careful," I said, forcing a small smile.

The silence between us grew awkward, so I decided to change the subject. "Papá, I've been thinking... Could Ale start training me?"

Alejandro my father's best friend's son, I haven't seen him in forever but he seems like a good person to do something like this.

His eyebrow shot up in surprise. "¿Alejandro? ¿Por qué quieres entrenar?"

(Alejandro? ¿Por qué quieres entrenar? - Alejandro? Why do you want to train?)

I hesitated for a moment, not wanting to spill everything. "I don't know. I just... I want to get stronger."

He studied me for what felt like forever before nodding slowly. "Está bien, hablaré con él. Pero prométeme que me dirás si pasa algo."

(Está bien, hablaré con él. Pero prométeme que me dirás si pasa algo. - okay I'll talk to him. But promise me if anything happens you'll tell me)

"Lo prometo, Papá," I replied, feeling a bit of relief wash over me. At least he didn't ask for more details. Inside, though, my thoughts were a mess.

(Lo prometo - I promise)

There was no way I'd ask Matteo for help after what happened. I'd rather die than go back to him for anything. Training with Ale might not be ideal, but it was better than the alternative.

Papa gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder before heading off. Once he was gone, I sat down, feeling the weight of everything pressing down on me.
