I followed Julian back inside, my mind a jumbled mess of confusion and regret. I'd tried to do the right thing, but everything had spiraled out of control.
The weight of my mistakes pressed heavily on me, but I was determined to make things right with Valentina. I had to find her and apologize, even though I wasn't entirely sure how.
As we approached the room, I heard Valentina's sobs before I even saw her. My heart sank when I finally did. There she was, being held by Alejandro, who was wiping away her tears.
The sight struck me with an intense wave of anger. I didn't even know what Alejandro was doing around her, but the fact that he was comforting her while I had been messing everything up was infuriating.
Julian must have seen the fury in my eyes. He gave me a sharp, knowing glance, and I knew exactly what he was thinking.
This wasn't the time for me to fall apart again. I had to stay focused.
In a surge of frustration, I muttered under my breath, "Cazzo, dimentica tutto quello che ho detto."
(Cazzo, dimentica tutto quello che ho detto - fuck forget everything I said.)
I could barely contain my anger. Forget everything I just said about standing up, I'm sitting right back down.
Julian, who was already fuming, didn't hold back. He turned to me, his expression a mix of disbelief and frustration. "Seriously? Sei proprio un cazzo di idiota. Chi diavolo sei diventato?"
(Sei proprio un cazzo di idiota. Chi diavolo sei diventato - Your such a fucking idiot. Who the fuck have you become?)
I felt the sting of his words. He was right—I was letting my emotions get the best of me, and it was making things worse. I was so caught up in the chaos that I wasn't thinking straight.
Julian took another drag of his cigarette, the smoke curling around him as he looked at me with a mix of pity and annoyance. "You need to get your shit together, Matteo. This isn't about you. It's about her. And you're making it worse."
I nodded, feeling the weight of his words. He was right; I couldn't let my frustration cloud my judgment any longer. I had to face this head-on, no matter how difficult it was. But the sight of Alejandro still standing there, holding Valentina, made my blood boil.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself as Julian continued to stare at me, waiting for me to get my act together. The last thing I wanted was to mess things up even more. I had to find a way to fix this, and I had to do it quickly.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. I needed to talk to Valentina, and I had to do it alone. Julian, sensing my resolve, gave me a nod before turning to Alejandro.
"Let's give them some space," Julian said, his voice firm. Alejandro gave Valentina one last reassuring glance before following Julian out of the room.
The door closed behind them, leaving just Valentina and me. Her eyes were red, and her face was streaked with tears. She stood there, arms crossed, clearly still upset.
"What do you want, Matteo?" she asked, her voice cracking with hurt.
I took a step forward, trying to gather my thoughts. "I wanted to apologize. I messed up badly. I didn't mean to hurt you, and I'm sorry for everything that's happened."
Valentina looked at me with a mixture of pain and disbelief. "You really hurt my feelings, you know. It felt like you didn't care at all."
I reached out, gently swiping a tear from under her eye with my thumb. "I know," I said softly, my voice filled with regret. "I really am sorry."
Valentina's eyes locked onto mine, her expression a mix of hurt and a hint of something else—defiance, perhaps. "I'm surprised you even apologized. I've never heard you say that word before," she said, her voice steady but laced with emotion.
I took a deep breath, my voice earnest. "I don't usually say it. But this is different. I know I hurt you."
Valentina tilted her head slightly, a small smirk forming at the corner of her lips. "You know, Matteo, you really messed up. You said I was dragging myself into this mess. You blamed me for everything, even though it wasn't my fault."
Her smirk was faint but pointed, as if she were daring me to understand the depth of her pain. "I'm sorry," I said, my voice filled with genuine regret.
Valentina's gaze remained steady, her smirk fading as she continued. "You made me feel worthless, like I was the problem. I'm not sure if just saying you're sorry is enough."
I reached out, lightly touching her arm in an attempt to bridge the emotional gap between us. "I really am sorry for everything. I didn't mean to hurt you. I understand now how badly I've messed up."
Valentina's expression softened slightly, but her voice carried a sharp edge. "It's good to hear you say that, but you have to prove it. Actions speak louder than words."
I nodded, feeling the weight of her words. "I know."
Her gaze lingered on mine, and the smirk finally disappeared. She took a deep breath, her shoulders relaxing just a bit. "Alright," she said quietly. "I'll give you a chance."
Relief mixed with a lingering sense of guilt as I continued to hold her gaze. Slowly, I reached out and gently touched her cheek, my thumb brushing away a stray tear. "Thank you for this chance," I said softly. "I promise I'll be right here."
Valentina's eyes softened further, and she gave a small nod, though the hurt was still evident. I could tell that rebuilding trust would be a gradual process, but I was ready to face it head-on, with both my words and my actions.
