Being caught up in work makes time slip through your fingers like sand. That's why it felt like just yesterday when I was at Seventeen's concert, yet here I am, four months later, still with S.Coups lingering in the back of my mind. It's weird how you can miss someone you've never really met. I was going crazy over it.
Zooming down the road to another company meeting, my phone buzzed with a call from Hana. She hardly ever calls, so naturally, I braced myself for something big.
"Hey, Hana," I answered.
"Hey, Lia! Have you made it to the company yet?" Her tone was urgent.
"Not yet, almost there. What's up?" Anxiety pricked at me.
"I've got news, big news!" she exclaimed.
"Okay, spill it," I urged.
"I landed a job in Seoul," she dropped the bomb.
I slammed the brakes, thankfully not on the freeway. My face went blank. I couldn't even form a reaction.
"What do you mean you got a job in Seoul?" I practically shouted into the phone.
"Yeah, crazy, right? My friend's cousin owns this amazing café there and needed someone with English skills who knows pastries. It's a dream job! I haven't accepted yet, but I'm seriously considering it."
Wow. Speechless.
"Hana, that's incredible! You have to take it!" I couldn't contain my happiness.
"I know, but I don't want to leave you behind. You're my bestie! Which is why I'm thinking, why don't you come with me?"
I was floored. Move to Seoul? Me?
"Are you serious, Hana? My whole life is here. Job, family, everything! What would I even do there? Find a job? In Korea?" I rambled.
"Hey, we've always talked about living in Seoul, and now's our chance. And don't worry about work. I'll help you find something. You're smart, experienced, and your Korean is pretty good. Isn't this the sign you've been waiting for? Let's take the plunge! Adventure awaits!"
My mind raced. She had a point. Seoul has always been a dream. Sure, it was scary, but it was also thrilling. A chance to start fresh, with my best friend by my side. And hey, bonus, Seventeen's there. I chuckled to myself.
"Okay, let me sleep on it. We'll chat tonight," I said, pushing aside the future for the present.
"Fighting! Catch you later!" Hana hung up.
I revved up the car and pushed forward to the meeting, thoughts of Seoul dancing in my head.
Later that evening, Hana managed to sway me over.
"It's going to be epic, Lia! Just you wait!" she beamed.
I smiled and got my hopes up. Seoul, here we come!
In the following month, Hana and I tackled everything: quit our jobs and snagged a cozy apartment in Seoul. Luckily, Hana's friend's cousin hooked us up, finding a sweet spot in a nice neighborhood. And the price? Surprisingly reasonable. We couldn't resist!
Come Monday, we packed up and hopped on a one-way flight. Our families were a mix of anxious and excited for our new adventure.
As we landed in Seoul, it felt surreal. We were finally here.
"Let's grab our stuff and catch a cab to our new digs," I suggested.
Peering out the taxi window, I was mesmerized by the city lights, painting everything in a magical glow.
