It is so much safer not to feel, not to let the world touch me.                           - Sylvia Plath

Chapter Song - I Feel A Sin Comin' On by Pistol Annies

I face myself in the mirror.

Dark hair long and straight down my back, mid-length white dress tight around my waist and flowy down my legs, with simple white flats on my feet.

I face myself in the entryway mirror and decide whether or not I want this rain check to mean something else. It's two friends playing pool - alone. It's two friends acting on light competition.

This is normal, casual; it isn't a date.

If it was, Maverick is the type of guy to ask without hesitation.

"Very pretty, Duckling." Mum smiles, leaning on the archway to the living room.

I let out a slow breath. "Thank you."

"You can use Grandmas car to get there." She tells me.

"That's alright, Maverick is taking me."

"Where are you going?" Oli' asks, peering at me with a raised brow.

"I'm going out." I tell him.

James spawns beside him, chocolate covering his face. "Who are you going out with?" He asks, munching on a chocolate cupcake - explains the chocolate.

"A friend." I answer.

"Okay." He says, both of the two leaving and returning to the living room to watch Iron Man

Mum's eyebrow arches in question. "A friend? So, is this a date, or no?"

"No!" I exclaim. "No, no, it's a rain check. Just two friends playing a game of pool."

"Aha, right," Mum nods slowly. "Do you both know that?" She's amused, though this is not an amusing situation.

Is it something more? A step to a bigger stone? No. It's just two friends playing a game of pool.

Nothing more, nothing less.

"Yes." I hiss slightly.

She laughs to herself. "Alright, well, have fun. Be safe."

I pick up my bag and phone, walking over to her. "I will," I kiss her cheek. "Also, can you hide an ice cream sandwich for me? Otherwise Oli' will eat it before I can."

"I'll make sure to put it high up and down the back with the meat." She assures me.

"Good, thank you." I smile to her. "Um," I glance between the door and her, before hugging her tightly. She wraps her arms around me in record speed, nuzzling her face into my hair. "I love you."
