We head toward Mitch's house. After a few minutes, we arrive. "Alright, we're here. This should be easy. It's getting dark out. I hope the key is there, though," I say
Jack checks under the carpet. "No, it's not there; he must've moved it. There has to be another way in," Jack says
"I got this. Just make sure no one sees me," I say, referring to my unique ability to transform into any animal at will, a skill I've honed over the years. Jack, my best friend and partner in crime, nods in understanding.
"Got it. I'll keep a lookout for you," Jack says, his voice filled with trust and camaraderie.
I approach the gate with the grace of a predator, my hands transforming into sharp claws. With a swift and silent movement, I pick the lock, the sound barely audible in the night. After what feels like an eternity, I manage to open the gate. "There we go, nice and easy," I say, my voice a mere whisper.
"How did you do that?" Jack says
"I picked up a few skills over time. Let's just leave it at that," I say, a hint of mystery in my voice, as I return my hand to normal.
"I'm learning more about you every day," Jack says
"Yeah, I know. Now, let's find a hiding place before everyone gets here," I say
We go into the backyard, a vast expanse of greenery that seems to stretch on forever. "Man, I knew the backyard was big, but man, this is unnecessary," Jack says, his voice echoing in the open space.
We find a curtain near one of the yard's corners. "we'll hide here. It should work," I say
We go through the curtain and see a grass cutout of Mitch, a surprising sight that leaves us both momentarily speechless. "Wow, I never knew Mitch had this big of an ego," Jack says, his voice filled with a mix of amusement and disbelief.
"I'm getting sick looking at this," I say
"Alright, here's the plan. You can change your voice, right?" Jack says
"Yes, I can make it sound however I want," I say
"This is going to be the best prank ever," Jack says
"I'll make sure to burn that cutout," I say
"Please do also do you mind if I record this so that I have something to laugh at," Jack says
"Yeah, just make sure you don't post that anywhere," I say
"Sweet, and don't worry, I won't. Now, we wait for everyone to show up. When they do, you know what to do?" Jack says
"Yeah, I do. I'll turn into a huge dragon, scare everyone, burn that grass cutout, and escape simple," I say
"Don't worry about me. I'll sneak out amongst the chaos," Jack says
"Alright, now we wait for now. Tell me more about Mitch and your friendship," I say
"So Mitch was my best friend before you. He was awesome. He never acted rude or anything, but something happened to him that made him like he is now," Jack says, a hint of sadness in his voice.
"Do you know what happened?" I say
"Not really. He met with some shady people, and ever since then, he's been acting like this, and I cut all connections with him after that," Jack says
"I'm sorry to hear that," I say
"Hey, at least now I have a friend who can turn into any animal he wants," Jack says, a genuine smile on his face. I can't help but feel a warm sense of gratitude towards him.
"Yeah, and you're pretty great, too," I say
"Thanks, Dude, I try my best," Jack says
We start hearing music and people arriving. "All alright, people are beginning to get here," I say
"Dude, this is going to be epic. Just make sure you don't hurt anybody," Jack says
"I wasn't planning on doing that. I don't want to hurt anyone," I say
"Alright, I was just making sure I don't want to be responsible for anyone getting hurt," Jack says
"I have experience. I know what I'm doing," I say
Jack takes out his phone. "alright, whenever you're ready," Jack says
"Hey everyone, thanks for coming to my party," Mitch says
"It's now or never, James," Jack says
"Yeah, I know. Be ready to sneak out when you're done," I say
"I know, don't worry about me, just do your thing," Jack says
I change into a giant dragon. "Prepare to witness history," I whisper to Jack with my new voice.
"Everyone feast your eyes on this," Mitch says, his voice booming through the speakers. The curtains open, revealing me in all my dragon glory, my scales glistening in the light, my wings spread wide. The crowd gasps in awe and fear.
The curtains open, and everyone starts screaming. "Who dares to disturb firewing?" I say
"I'm sorry, please don't burn us to a crisp," Mitch says
I burn the grass cut out. "Leave and never return," I say
Everyone runs off. "Alright, I think we're clear. I guess I didn't need to sneak off after all," Jack says
I change back to my human form, relief flooding through me. "Let's get out of here before anyone sees us," I say, my mind racing with thoughts of the successful prank and the need to escape unnoticed.
We quickly leave the backyard. "I'm going to head home. See you later, James," Jack says, walking off.
I head home, my footsteps echoing in the empty street. When I get inside, the living room light turns on, illuminating Molly's worried face. "James, you're home late. Where were you?" Molly says, her voice filled with concern.
"I was hanging out with Jack. I guess I lost track of time," I say
"It's fine. Just head to bed," Molly says
"Sure," I say
I head into my room, and I instantly lay on my bed and I fall asleep
