Love is a Battlefield

When they were first together everything was fun and new. While they had been friends for two years they had not been as close as they were now. It felt different, he felt different to her. Alex was so touchy and lovey but not in a creepy or pushy way like her high school boyfriend had been. No, Alex was always tentative to her needs and always made her feel adored. After that first night she had butterflies every time she thought of him. It was like puppy love and it made her excited but also hesitant as she hadn't felt this way for someone ever.

"Emmalynn you're zoning again! Hello, earth to bestie!" Tessa snapped her fingers in front of Emmalynn's face as they sat in the food hall at the student lounge on campus.

"What? Sorry! What were you saying?"

"I was saying, you know what it doesn't matter. When are we going to see that gorgeous boytoy of yours? Now that he finally admitted how he felt about you and you FINALLY let him" she said this very sarcastically but with joy in her face.

"Ha you're hilarious. It's not like I was keeping him from it all this time. "

Cough "bullshit" cough Tessa mocked.

"Tess" she smacked her playfully. "Well, maybe I did keep him at arms length a lot, but can you blame me? I mean you saw how he treated his previous relationships."

"If you can even call them that. Look, I'm not saying Alex is a saint. Because lord knows he isn't, but I will say when it comes to you he would do anything. He really cares about you Emma. I could tell that from the first time I came to visit and you introduced us. I could see it in his face. The way he would look at you." Tessa gave her this goofy dreamy stare.

"Stop, he wasn't like that. He had a girlfriend at the time, but she never even came around me much honestly. I think he kept most of them away from me. I guess maybe because the ones he did bring could tell he liked me."

"Now the gears are turning."

"Hey now that's not funny."

"You're right but anyway just know that I wholeheartedly support you with him but I will kick his butt if he hurts you. I don't think he will though. Not when he has fought tooth and nail to even get this far with you."

"It's not like I put up a huge fight T."

Tessa looks at her pointedly.

"Okay, I might have put him in the friendszone for a while but you know why I did that."

"No, I don't, enlighten me."

"Because I was scared if I let him in...that I... " she looked away from her friend as she thought about it for a second searching for the right words. "would lose myself."

"I think if you really let him in you'll find the rest of you. The you that you have been hiding from most of the world."

"What do you mean? Is that innuendo? Because Tess you know..."

"EWWW get your head outta the gutter. " She scrunched up her face and giggled loudly. 

All of a sudden Emmalynn's eyes were covered by two hands gently. She could smell his cologne and feel his heartbeat behind her. 

"What gutter do you have your mind in and am I the reason it is there?" he said in her ear with a rye smile and a quick kiss to the top of her head.

"Hey now! Why are covering my eyes?" she said with a nervous lift in her voice but she was smiling. Those butterflies were working overtime in her tummy again.
