I could hear the loud buzz of people above me, whispering back and forth to each other.

"Is she hot?" I heard one say.

"Dibs!" Yelled another.

"Everyone, calm down please. She's obviously a little on edge." The boy that was in the cage with me said.

He turned away from the crowd to me, still sitting on the floor, knees to chest.
The boy offered me his hand, slight grin on his face. I refused his offer and steadily got up on my own. I looked around and realized that all the people were male. No girls. Just me.

"Shit." I said under my breath.

The boy that was in the cage with me helped me out of it. The boy had shaggy blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes. He had a little bit of a tan and a big smile.
I stood up onto the grass, slowly rotating, taking in everything.
The blonde boy looked at me and extended his arms upwards, gesturing all around.

"Welcome to the Glade!" He shouted.

"Where am I?" I asked, not knowing what a Glade was.

"Home." The blonde boy said.

I shook my head no, and asked again. "Where am I?" It came out more frustrated than scared. I narrowed my eyes at the boy.
The boy held up a finger, stoping me from talking, and turned towards the crowd behind him.

"Everyone back to work!" He commanded.
He turned to face me, grinning again.
"Okay! This is the Glade, and I'm Newt. Ably is our leader, and I'm taking you to see him right now. He's gonna give ya the tour, Greenie!" He stated.
He put his right hand on my lower back, guiding me.
"You're gonna love it here once you're used to it. And us!" He smiled.

-

"Hey Newt! Is this the new Greenie?"

"Yes," he replied.

"Nice to meet you," the man said. "My names Alby. I am in command here, and when I'm not around, Newt is in charge."
He stuck out his hand for me to shake, and I did so. Alby turned to Newt and said, "Do me a favour. Can you go find Chuck?"

"All right."

"Thanks."
He turned back to me and chuckled.
"Alright Greenie! Lemme give ya the tour."

He led me to a tall building, slightly leaning, made out of wood. Alby started to climb up the ladder and stopped, looking back at me.
"Hope you're not afraid of heights." He said, continuing to climb.

I went after him, carefully climbing up as I go.
I reached the top and stood up slowly, looking around. Alby leaned against the rail, and I copied.

"This is all we got. We worked hard for it." He said, looking at me. "If you respect this place, you and I will get along just fine."

I nodded.

He let out a small sigh and continued talking.
"We only have three rules. First, do your part. No time for any freeloaders. Second, never harm another Glader. None of this works unless we have trust."
He gestured to the Glade.
"Third, and most importantly, never go beyond those walls."

I stared off into the distance, trying to see inside the concrete walls. I could see some vines making their ways up and around them.

"You got that Greenie?" He asked me, in a serious tone.

"Yes." I replied.

"Come on. There's something special going on tonight, and you need to be there."

"Why?"

"Because you're the guest of honour." He grinned.

-

I sat on my ass in the dirt, my back leaning against a log. Music played around me and the cheers of people continued to get louder. Some people danced, some ate, some drank, some fought. Others just sat and watched. I was one of those people. There was a big bone fire burning in the middle of the action. Its flames went up and up and licked the sky. The crackle of smoke and fire was loud.

"Hey."

I turned my head to see Newt sitting down next to me to my left. I smiled him a 'hello'.
He was eating a kebab of meat and he handed me a jar of almost-tinted orange colour liquid.

"Here, Try it." He said.

I unscrewed the lid and unsurely took a sip. I spat it out immediately and gasped.

"What is that?!" I asked him.

"Not sure," he replied. "It's Gallys secret recipe."

I shook my head. "That's revolting."

"You'll get used to it." He said.

The silence grew loud but the beat of the crowd was louder.

"Why can't I remember my name? Or anything actually?" I asked him.

"I have no idea," He said. "The same thing happened to all of us. Me. We don't know why but our memories have been erased. Of our friends. Families. I don't even know if I have a bloody family anymore."

"Oh."

"It's okay. Look." He said, turning his body towards the bonfire. "See those guys by the fire? Those are the Runners. And that guy right there, that's Minho. He's the keeper of the Runners. They go out into the maze every morning, mapping it, trying to find a way out. And every night when the suns goes down, those door close, and they have to make it back before they do. Otherwise, you're stuck out there for the night with the Grievers, and no one ever survives a night in the maze."

"What are Grievers?" I ask him.

"Death. Evil. Life taking mechanical monsters."

My eyes widen slightly as a Griever screeches in the distance. Newt looks over at me, seeing me frightened.

"Don't worry, we are safe in here." He says, trying to comfort me. He puts his right hand on my left shoulder gently. "I promise." He says.
My hands start to sweat a little and my cheeks turn a light shade of pink. I shake it off and smile at him.

"Thank you." I say.

"Don't worry. Now, enough questions for one night."
Newt stood up and offered his hand. I took it and smiled again.

"Hey Newt." Clint said, walking past us.

"Hey Clint." He replied, waving a small bye to him, letting go of my hand.

I yawned.

"You tired?" He asked me.

I nodded, rubbing my eyes a little.

"Come on. I will take you to your hammock." He said.

I laughed a little. "Thanks, Newt."
