That same night, screams of terror woke up the inhabitants of the Prancing Pony. They were coming from the room of the elves. More importantly, they were coming from the elleth that was having dreams under the fluorescent light of the moon. Her dreams were no mare nightmares but her past memories. You see, meeting her soul brother triggered her memories from when her own family threw her out of Rivendell.
Hearing her screaming like that, Legolas tried to wake her up by calling her name.
"Lúthien... Lúthien wake up. It is just a nightmare. Muinthel nin, nobody can hurt you while I am here, " he told her.But when he saw that his method was not working, he chose to touch her hand and start making circles with his thumb in a calm manner. He also was wishpering sweet nothings to her.
Lúthien woke up with a gasp, like she was running from something. The first thing she could feel after coming to her senses was his warm breath in her ear, which comforted her really much.
"Hannar...." she called for him.
"Yes muinthel nin I am here... What do you need?" he asked her with hope that he could comfort her.
"Nothing ... I just need you by my side, hannar nin." she wishpered.
"Oh, I'm never gonna live your side, muinthel nin... do you wanna talk about it?" he asked her calmly, although on the inside he was broken that his soul sister had those thoughts.
"Not right now .... I can't say it, hannar nin." she told him.
"Okay ... just go back to sleep, we will talk in the morning, muinthel nin." he told her as he started playing with her hair. After a while, he noticed that she had fallen asleep. She looked so peaceful under the moonlight for once, and after seeing her so vulnerable, he swore to the Valar that he would protect her. And with those thoughts, Legolas went to sleep as well.
The next morning Lúthien was woken up by the feeling of the warm rays of the sun on her skin. Feeling comfortable and not wanting to get up, she tried to hide to hide her face in her pillow. It took her some time to understand that her pillow was breathing. 'Wait......why is my pillow breathing? Pillows are not supposed to breathe.... are they?' After having a small mental breakdown, she looked up to see that her pillow was indeed breathing because said pillow was Legolas. After having a second meltdown, she tried to get up, but Legolas only tightened his hold of her.
Legolas was already awake when his soul sister was awoken. He was just so comfortable that he did not want to alarm her, so he chose to pretend to be asleep. He thought that his soul sister was really cute when she was panicking inside her head. She looked so much like a little bunny that he wanted to laugh. When she started squirming, he couldn't take it anymore, and tried to make it look like she woke him up.
"Stop squirming and go back to sleep, muintel nin." he told her, trying to make her, see reason, after all it was really early.
"But... but" she tried to find an excuse to make him get up, but none came to mind.
"It's okay, muinthel nin. It's still early. Go back to sleep." he murmured in her ear.
Seeing as he was not gonna get up Lúthien decided to listen to him and go back to sleep.
The second time that day that Lúthien woke up, she was all alone in the room. No Legolas in sight. She thought that maybe he had changed his mind and left her. She was ready to cry when the door to the room opened up, and Legolas came in. Seeing as he was still here, she rushed to hug him. She hugged him so hard since she was afraid that he would disappear again.
"What's the matter, muinthel nin?" he asked her panicked when he saw the tears in her eyes.
"Nothing... I just thought you left me for good when I didn't see you." Lúthien answered, relieved that he was still there.
"Now, why would you think that, muinthel nin?" Legolas asked her when he calmed down.
"Promise me you won't ever leave me, hannar nin." she panickly demanded.
"OK, I promise I won't ever leave you, muinthel nin." he answered. He was so anxious to learn what would make his sister behave like this.
"You see... my family threw me out when my mother was attacked by orcs and left for the Undying Lands, saying that I should have gone instead of her.... so please, I beg of you don't abandon me too, hannar nin." she wishpered her story to him.
'Oh Valar, how could they do that to his soul sister?' thought Legolas while he hugged her with much more passion. He wanted to hide her and protect her from the rest of the world. 'How dare they, when I find out who they are, I am gonna make them pay for what they have done to you, muinthel nin' Legolas made that promise to himself that he will avenge her.
"It's okay. I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere, muinthel nin." Legolas reassured her.
And they stayed like that, in the arms of each other till it was time for lunch.
