Sakura petals cascaded around me as I walked through the UA High School gates. It was my second day of my first year of high school, and my Mom had seen me off before speeding away to work. I glanced to my right, seeing the petals brought across by a gentle breeze from a nearby sakura tree, underneath which stood a familiar face.
Mina, my friend of middle school, grinned as she waved me over, gripping the strap of her messenger bag tightly.
"Kirishima-kun!" She said cheerfully. "We have class together today, right? Biology and Physical Ed?"
I nodded. After receiving our class assignments the previous day, we'd compared our classes and found the ones we had together. The rest of our friends from middle school had ended up at the Private School on the other side of town, so we'd endeavoured to cling together as much as possible.
"Biology first period," I mumbled, trying to remember my timetable. "Then we're in the gym this afternoon."
Mina nodded enthusiastically. "Have you joined a club yet?"
"It's only the first day, Ashido." I laughed. "Have you?"
"Yep!" She grinned, jumping in the air and landing in a pose. "You're looking at UA's newest cheerleader! Try-outs were yesterday, and I aced them!"
I smiled; being a cheerleader suited the energetic girl. I continued as we started walking towards our homeroom, trying to remember my way around the massive buildings. "You still wanna be a dancer?"
"Of course!" She shoved me gently. "What about you? Have you decided what you want to do after high school?"
"Not yet." I mumbled. "I can't even decide which club to join. Mom wants me to do something educational, but the only subject I have any interest in is-"
"Rocks..." Mina finished for me. "You could start a geology club?"
I shrugged, tucking the thought away for later. "I was thinking about trying out for wrestling - I've always been pretty good at that kind of stuff."
Mina swooned exaggeratedly. "You mean I'd get to come stare at you and a bunch of guys slamming each other's bodies in skin-tight singlets?"
"You're weird." I laughed - though I'd never seen the appeal of watching the cheerleaders like the other boys, so I'd come to the conclusion that I was the weird one. "The other sports clubs are too...team-y for me. I don't like the idea of potentially being benched all season."
"True..." She replied quietly, dragging me to one side to avoid an oncoming student. "It might be a good way to meet new people, though. I've already made a few friends from cheer!"
"You're right." I sighed, as we entered our homeroom class. The room was bustling with people - some scattered on random desks, others clumped up in groups. We'd been in an all-school assembly during homeroom the previous day, so nobody had claimed seats yet. Mina and I took the empty desks in the second row. As I was about to sit down, a boy with golden hair approached.
"Hey!" He laughed. "I was gonna sit there, do you mind taking the one behind?"
I shrugged, moving my bag to the desk behind, so I was diagonal from Mina. The canary-haired boy had perched on top of his desk, grinning at my sakura-haired friend.
"What are your names?" He asked energetically, glancing to me before staring at Mina with an almost predatory look.
"Mina Ashido." The girl said casually, pulling out a compact mirror to check her lip gloss. "My best friend over there is Eijiro Kirishima."
"Ashido and Kirishima." He repeated. "I'm Denki Kaminari! Did you guys go to Yotzuzawa Middle? I don't recognise you."
"We went to Wanami Middle." I answered, Mina being too occupied with her makeup to pay attention. "Most of our classmates ended up at Tachinan High."
