"i still can't believe that you initiated the break, iwa-chan," oikawa commented offhandedly.
"gee, thanks for your support." the spiked hair boy mumbled, rolling his eyes.
the two were outside y/n's house, waiting to walk with her to school. the group were out fairly late last night just talking at their old middle school, showing y/n around and reminiscing in the memories. while they were talking, they were making a few jokes about yumie, immediately apologizing to iwazumi out of habit.
"did i not tell you? i told her we needed to go on a break, so we did." he was then bombarded with questions from the three boys, scolding him for not telling them as soon as he did it.
oikawa shrugged, "i mean, you know we don't like her, we just never thought you'd actually get away from her."
"hey, i said we're on a break not broken up, so i would really appreciate it if you can stop talking shit, oikawa."
"don't let me say i told you so, iwa-chan~"
"you literally hooked us up together."
"that was first semester, first year me. very irrelevant," oikawa rolled his eyes, "and how was i supposed to know? she had a whole different personality at kitagawa daiichi."
"hey guys, were you waiting for long?" y/n walked up to the two, closing the gate behind her.
oikawa shook his head, "not at all, y/n-chan. we were just talking for like five minutes."
she looked over to iwaizumi, "remember, you always have the right to smack tooru-nii if he's being annoying."
iwaizumi let out a chuckle, nodding to the girl. the three start walking to school talking about their nutrition, fitness plans and goals, y/n chiming in with information and recommendations from time to time.
as soon as the third years stepped foot on the campus, they see their junior, kentarou kyotani dragging y/n away followed by shigeru yahaba's scolding, shinji watari and kindaichi following along. oikawa sweatdropped at the scene, jealously mumbling something about y/n being a better role model to the underclassmen than himself. iwaizumi took the opportunity to make a jab at the boy, leading to their hourly banter.
it was cut short when uragiri yumie stood in front of iwaizumi with a red, furious face. "a word, hajime?"
the boy nodded understandingly, bidding his friend goodbye and walking with yumie to a more secluded area. "what's up, yumie?"
"you randomly tell me we're going on a break after your match, not answer any of my calls or texts over the weekend, basically blocking me, and this is the greeting i get, hajime?"
iwaizumi sighed, "i really do appreciate your support, yumie, but i feel as if we haven't been spending time together because of our busy schedules-"
"because you're always busy with volleyball."
"it's not just volleyball," iwaizumi stated, annoyed by her interruption, "i really do try to help you emotionally, academically and financially while still trying to have a healthy student-athlete-life balance, but it's been draining lately."
"we were perfectly fine last year, how is this different?"
"i really don't know, but we have not been perfectly fine. especially since last summer. so please, let's take a break and just work our things out."
"but i love you, hajime. isn't it enough that i'm constantly going out to support you?" the bell rang, signaling that everyone needs to head to class. yumie sighs, "fine. i'll respect your decision. but remember hajime, she could be using you."
iwaizumi watches her walk away towards her friends, letting out a long sigh before turning to walk to his own class. thankfully, the seating chart was rearranged due to midterms coming up, so he sat next to y/n. after walking into class, he saw that she was already sitting down on her phone. he walked up to his seat and gave her a strained smile.
"are you okay, iwa-san?" y/n asked, setting her phone down and ignoring the messages she was receiving from oikawa and kuroo.
"yeah, yumie was just bombarding me with questions about the break."
"oh..." she mumbled, "are you okay?"
iwazumi gave a small, genuine smile, appreciating her concern, "honestly, not right now, but i think this break was long overdue."
"no matter how selfish it sounds, always put yourself first, because who would take care of the ones you love?"
the boy chuckled at her words of motivation, somehow, she always knew what to say to cheer his mood.
"thanks, y/n."
