Suddenly strange portals began to appear in Korea. Grotesque creatures emerged from those portals. They were known as errors. The emergence of the monsters was soon followed by the appearance of another phenomenon—manifestation of supernatural abilities in certain members of the population.
They were known as espers. But they suffered from their own abilities, which made them overheat, that's why every esper needed their guide. The one that was in perfect sync with their powers, they were called guides and their bond with the esper was called Link.
However, the S-rank esper, Yoo Joonghyuk, was unable to establish a bond with the guides provided to him. Everyone was so weak that no one could control Joonghyuk's immense power.
So, in the end, the government decided to give Yoo Joonghyuk another chance. To find a guide for himself. A person he was perfectly synced with. He was given a year's time.
The world has been plunged into chaos since the appearance of the errors. Humanity was struggling to survive. But Yoo Joonghyuk wasn't going to fail. He was going to find a guide, even if it means searching through every single person on Earth.
When the second portal had appeared in Seoul, Kim Dokja was watching the news. It had happened suddenly and without warning. The television had shown a sudden cut to static, then another image. A man dressed in white stood in the middle of what appeared to be a portal.
The man was beautiful, so much that Kim Dokja could only stare at the screen. His skin was pale and unblemished. His eyes were cold and empty. His hair was long and dark, and his lips were full. He wore a long white coat, and his hands were covered by leather gloves.
As the man raised one hand, Kim Dokja watched in fascination as the portal behind him began to swirl. Then, as if someone was playing with the sound of the TV, a strange static sound started playing, and soon, a low-pitched hum could be heard.
Kim Dokja couldn't understand what the man was saying, but he understood the words that were written above his head.
Mistake.
"Dokja! Are you watching the news again?"
His mother's voice broke through the spell, and Kim Dokja turned around to face her. She looked tired. There were bags under her eyes, and she had lost some weight. She wore an apron over a dress that had seen better days. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and there were streaks of grey in it.
"Sorry, mom," Kim Dokja said, looking down at his lap.
He knew that his mother was worried about him. He wasn't like the other men his age, who were all obsessed with becoming a guide and esper. He didn't care about it. He had no desire to work as a guide, he manifested as one a few weeks ago, but he still continued working as an office worker.
"Come on, let's eat."
His mother put a bowl of kimchi stew in front of him and sat down next to him. As they ate, Kim Dokja listened to his mother's chatter.
"I heard that the second portal opened up in Seoul," she said.
Kim Dokja looked up. "It's such a shame, isn't it? I mean, the first portal was bad enough, but the second one..."
She shook her head. "Well, at least we have the S-rank esper Yoo Joonghyuk on our side now, right?"
Kim Dokja nodded. "Yeah, I guess."
"You're not worried about him?"
He shook his head. "No, I'm not worried. He seems like he's got things under control. Besides, he has the guides from the government to help him."
