Taehyung, October 15, 1985, Royal Palace of Azura
I feel my muscles involuntarily tighten as a surge of discomfort washes over me upon hearing his words. "Get away from me," I manage to force out through tightly clenched teeth, the tremor in my voice betraying the fear simmering beneath the surface.
As Jungkook's hand, which had been lazily stroking my arm, suddenly tightens, a glint of warning flashes in his eyes. "Don't you dare use that tone with me," he warns sharply. "Behave yourself, or I'll make sure that your entire family faces dire consequences."
Jungkook turns me around and starts guiding me out, his hand resting on the small of my back. We walk in silence for a few minutes and then finally he removes the blindfold from my eyes.
I blinked rapidly, squinting against the brightness as my eyes gradually adjusted to the glare. Before me loomed a massive water tank, its imposing size casting a shadow over the surrounding area. The tank gleamed in the sunlight, water rippling gently at the surface where it was filled to capacity. Adjacent to it, a sturdy ladder extended down, and I assume it's for me.
"Simple task. Go up there and jump." Jungkook says from beside me.
"How does me breathing underwater help you?" I ask him.
"I just want to know everything you can do." Jungkook says. "Now, go."
I slowly trudge over to the ladder, feeling the weight of every step as I make my way towards it. Gripping the cold, metal rungs, I begin the arduous task of climbing upward. The tank seemed to stretch on for miles, and each rung required a significant effort to ascend. As I laboriously make my way to the top, a sense of vertigo hits me as I peer down and see how small everything appears from this height. Taking a moment to steady myself, I draw in a deep breath and gaze down at the shimmering water below me.
What if I actually can't breath underwater. My swimming skills are non-existent.
"I don't have all day!" Jungkook's frustrated yell pierces through the air, prompting me to take a deep breath and launch myself into the chilling water below. As the icy embrace encases my limbs, a shiver courses through me, making every movement feel like a struggle against the freezing currents. Despite the discomfort, I push through, the sensation of my wet hair slapping against my face a stark reminder of the challenge at hand. Why must this task test me so?
Then realization hits me.
I can breathe.
As the realization dawns on me, a sense of relief washes over me instantaneously. It strikes me profoundly, and a wave of gratitude fills my being; I can breathe freely and deeply without any effort. It was a moment of clarity that brought a small yet genuine grin to my features, showcasing the wonder of my own abilities. Allowing myself to float effortlessly for a few serene moments, I eventually decide to gently lift myself up from the water. The stark contrast of the cold air against my already-chilled body sends a shiver down my spine, but as the numbness dissipates from my limbs, I prepare myself to slowly begin the descent downwards.
"You can breath underwater." Jungkook exclaims as I walk over to him.
"I know," I mutter quietly. "Can I get a towel and some clothes, please?"
"Of course," Jungkook replies warmly. Within mere moments, a maid hurries over to my side, handing me a freshly laundered towel and a set of clothes in a supportive gesture.
Jungkook stares at me as I rub the towel on my face and hair. "Your hair needs to be cut." Jungkook says. I look down at my hair that's almost down to my shoulders.
"I'll get that arranged soon. For now, change into those and we'll proceed to the next task." Jungkook informs.
"Change? Where should I?" I say.
"Right here." Jungkook answers.
I gave him a disgusted look. "I'm not changing in front of you."
I gave him a disgusted look, the expression on my face mirroring my discomfort. "I'm not changing in front of you," I asserted firmly, my tone leaving no room for argument.
"I'll turn around," Jungkook replied, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips. "Just this once. Oh and all the other guards are not looking, I made sure of it." With a confident swagger, he pivoted on his heel, his back now facing me, a move that once again left me bewildered and surprised by his audacity.
Nevertheless, feeling a mix of defiance and resignation, I began to slowly peel off the swimsuit that clung to my skin like a second layer. Every fiber of my being was hyper-aware of Jungkook's presence, my gaze flickering to him now and then to ensure that he was indeed keeping his promise and not stealing glances.
Once free of the confining swimsuit, I wrapped myself in a towel, its comforting warmth a stark contrast to the chill of the room. Taking a deep breath to steel myself, I proceeded to change into the clothes that had been provided for me. A simple ensemble consisting of a soft blue shirt and sleek black pants.
"You can turn around." I mutter and Jungkook immediately turns.
"I really liked that suit on you. Distracted me from all your questions," Jungkook says with a sly grin, his confidence evident in the way he carries himself.
"Your poor mother." I mutter quietly, unable to hold back the teasing that bubbles up in response to his demeanor. However, Jungkook catches my words and his expression darkens, an edge of fury creeping into his gaze. With swift strides, he closes the distance between us, his grip firm as he clasps my arm tightly, a clear warning in his touch.
"Ever say that again and I'll rip your tongue out," Jungkook says through his gritted teeth, his dark eyes flashing with intensity as his nails dig into me, conveying a chilling warning that sends shivers down my spine.
"I'm s-sorry." I mutter, tears pricking my eyes for some reason. Since when have I cried this much?
Jungkook lets go of my arm and backs away. "I'm done with you, for now. Guards, take him back."
The guards quickly come forth and after a few minutes, I'm once again pushed into my cell.
What could have bothered Jungkook so much over those mere words?
Whatever it is, I will find out.
