Maddy's Pov:
What the hell. That's all I can think of right now. What a bipolar jerk-one minute he's flirty, the next he's cold and distant. I guess it's good I saw his true colors so quickly; not many girls get that lucky. Maybe getting stood up was for the best.
"Hey! Where's Huggy?" Dakota asks.
"Oh, uh, he left," I reply.
With a sigh, I start picking up the balls, not bothering to finish the round. I realize Dakota wasn't actually here to watch our game. Probably got bored of watching us play, I don't blame him. I wonder where Quinn ran off to - actually no, I don't care. It's better this way, Quinn wasn't being very discreet about us. The last thing I need is his friends finding out-it's only embarrassing for me.
"Really? He just left? That's so unlike him."
"Probably wasn't feeling good," I mumble, avoiding eye contact.
"Doesn't matter anyway. Now, how do you plan on getting home?" He moves closer, grabbing my waist.
"Eve, my best friend, drove us."
"Hm, and did this friend of yours drink at all?" He taps his fingers against my back, following the beat of the song playing.
"She had a few shots earlier, but nothing she can't handle," I say, wrapping my arms around his neck and looking into his eyes. "Why? You worried about me or something?"
"'Or something,' for sure," he replies with a smirk. I return a small smile, my heart racing as I realize how close we are. It's just us here, everyone left as Quinn and I played. My eyes flicker to his lips, following my gaze, he leans down. Unfortunately we're interrupted by a frantic voice.
"MADDY!" I break away from Dakota, practically jumping out of his arms.
"Eve-" I stop when I see her appearance. Messy hair, smudged lipstick, and heavy breathing. This cannot be good.
"We need to go, like right now," she says, striding toward me.
"Hi Dakota, I'm Eve, Maddy's best friend. Please excuse me, I'm usually more put together, but I need to get Mads home." She gives me a weird look before stepping away.
"Nice to meet you, Eve, and of course, I understand." He turns to look at me, both of us unsure what to do.
"Okay, we're leaving now," Eve abruptly grabs my wrist and starts to drag me away. I yank my arm back and glare at her.
"Give me one minute Evie. Please." She purses her lips before looking away. I speed-walk back to Dakota.
"Here, give me your phone," I demand. He's shocked for a second but quickly recovers, handing me his unlocked phone. I type in my number and send a simple "Hi."
"Text me," I say, leaning up to kiss his cheek.
"I will, Maddy," he smiles back.
