"Rai..put your seatbelt on we going hot to the nine month pregnancy with contractions two minutes apart." Raichelles eyes lit up and she pulled her seatbelt on. As Patrick drove she put a piece of gum in her mouth, smooth out her hair and applied chapstick and lip gloss. She checked to make sure she looked professional. Raichelle took pride in her job and she wanted to make sure she represented her company well. "561 out with fire." Pat transmitted over the radio as he hopped out the truck. "Grab my bag please." Raichelle instructed Patrick as he prepared to unload the stretcher. She wrapped her stethoscope around her neck and put on a pair of glove. A crew member from the fire department approached her and updated her about the patients wellbeing. "Moms contractions are 2 mins apart, she's lost her mucus plug and her water broke. She stated she was 2 centimeters dilated on her last OB visit earlier this week. She says husband was gonna drive her but when the feeling to push became strong she dialed 911 instead." Rai nodded her head in understanding and stepped inside of the doorway of the house. There were two young children running around and toys all over the livingroom. There were 4 other adults in the room with the patient. One of which she assumed was the husband, because he was holding the patients hand. Him and the mother to be were onnthe couch. He was seated in the corner and she was laying fown beside him on her back." Hello my name is Rai, I'll be caring for you on the way to the hospital. Is this your first baby mom?" She could clearly tell the patient was in pain by her facial expression. "No" she shook her head "I've had 2 miscarriages and a c-section that resulted in a still birth. I'm so afraid this baby won't make it. Can we please just go." The woman answered. "Don't you worry about that ma'am Raichelle is will take good care of you, she's one of the best." The firefighter that gave her report chimed in and Rai looked at him with daggers in her eyes. She hated to make promises to patients or telling them everything would be alright, but life is unpredictable and anything could go wrong from here to the hospital. "Ok sweetie, were gonna get to you going. You think you could stand up and take a step or two to get on my stretcher if we helped you?" Raichelle asked her extending her hand. "Wooo...oooh...wooo..ooo.." the woman began to breath loudly. Pat had made it inside with the stretcher and was standing by waiting to help. He immediately looked down at his watch to time the contraction their patient was obviously having at the moment. When the woman's grip on her hand softened Rai turned to Patrick. "How long?" He pushed a few toys over with his foot to stand next to her "About 35 seconds." He answered and grabbed the woman's other hand. "Alright let's ride." Raichelle said loudly so all the emergency workers could hear her and start playing their part in clearing the scene (getting everything they brought in thier trucks and helping to move the patient). "Alright, sweetie. What's your name?" The woman pulled herself up with the help of the crew and sat down on the stretcher. "Naomi." Raichelle layed a white sheet over her and stood back. "Ok Naomi, there gonna put a few seatbelts on you, so you'll be safe getting into the ambulance." She told her patient as Patrick and the fire fighters buckled the seatbelts. Patrick pressed the button the raise the stretcher to a comfortable level for him. "Are you riding dad? Do you have her ID and insurance card?" Naomi's husband nodded his head and pulled out his wallet to show the insurance card. "I'm going to follow behind you, there's no one else that can pick us up if I leave the car behind." Rai nodded her head in understanding and took the card. "Alright Pat." Patrick grabbed the handle and began to pull the stretcher. He hooked the back on the latch retract the wheels while holding the weight of the stretcher and pushed into the ambulance until he heard the click. Indicating it was locked securely in place. "Thanks guys. See you on the next call. Be safe!" Raichelle said to the fire fighters as she hiked up her pant legs and jumped into the ambulance. "Ooooooh...oooh" Naomi began to whine, so she checked looked down at her watch to time the contraction. With her free hand she palmed the woman's stomach to feel her belly hardening. That assured her these weren't braxton hicks and she was actually in labor. "Is there anything you need from me." Patrick asked holding one of the back doors open. "No we're fine. I'm gonna take her blood pressure and then we can go hot to childrens." She instructed him pulling her stethoscope from around her neck. She pressed the bell to Naomi stomach to hear the babies heartbeat. She wrote the number down and grabbed the blood pressure cuff placing it on her patients left arm. "Ok Naomi sit as still as possible and relax your arm." She placed the chest piece at the bottom of the cuff and pumped the inflation bulb. When the cuff was fully inflated she twist the release valve and notes the numbers when she heard Naomi's heartbeat. She wrote down the numbers. "Alright we good to go. What's the ETA (estimated time of arrival)?" She hoped that it would be too long, because from what she observed Naomi would give birth soon. "Twenty minutes" He answered and informed dispatch they were going hot to childrens. Raichelle pulled back the sheet and pulled up Naomi's nightgown. She saw the head and knew they wouldn't make it in time. "Ooooooooh...mmmmm.....OMGosh!I gotta push...I gotta push!" Naomi yelled and grabbed the handles on the stretcher squeezing them tightly. "Pat she's crowning. Radio dispatch with an update, I'm gonna play catch." Raichelle called off the vitals she recorded from the mother and the heart rate of the child as she put on gloves and a clothing protector. She coached the mother instructing her to push when she had contractions and guided the infants head out as she pushed. Once the baby was born, she stimulated him until she heard crying. Then she layed the baby on mom's chest and clamped the umbilical chord and cut it. She wrapped the baby with two towels and foil to keep the body temperature warm and used a bulb suction to clear the mouth and nose of the amniotic fluids.
"Oh my gosh, I can't believe you just delivered a baby." Patrick said smiling as he wheeled the stretcher to the ambulance. "I know, it still amazes me what were able to do on the ambulance." They both stopped and looked at the truck with the back door wide open. There were wrappers from the tools she used all over the floor and blood and amniotic fluids all over everything. Rai took a deep breath. "Call dispatchand let them know were headedback to headquartersfor restick and decontamination" She knew it would take atleast a half an hour to clean and restock the truck.
