On their way from their home to the youth volunteer site, they had to pass by Xiao's house. As they passed Xiao's front door, they overheard Xiao's mother asking Sanmei about what she ate in the factory and why she didn't bring anything back from the city for Xiao Guoxing.
Sanmei chuckled and replied, "I just joined the factory. The meals are provided by the factory on credit. Where would I get money to buy things for Guoxing?"
Xiao Mu then said, "You must be eating well in the factory. Haven't you saved anything to bring back for Guoxing?"
Sanmei remained silent, probably too frustrated to speak.
Xiao Xiao and Wang Wei exchanged a glance. Wang Wei gently patted her head, "It's okay, I'll take care of you." What kind of parents deserved to be called that? They had no idea how much suffering his wife endured at her parents' home. Fortunately, Xiao Xiao had forgotten all about her past, or it would be even more disgusting.
Xiao Xiao nodded and squeezed Wang Wei's hand, "I'll take care of you too."
While they were talking, the partially concealed door of Xiao's house suddenly opened. Xiao's mother was holding a basin of water, likely coming out to pour it. When she saw Wang Wei and Xiao Xiao, she was first surprised, then somewhat shrank back, saying, "Er... Ermei, why are you here?"
She thought Xiao Xiao came back to her parents' house. Feeling both happy and scared, she was pleased because she believed Xiao Xiao's earlier words about disowning them were just angry words. Moreover, now that Wang Wei had become a worker, she hoped the two families could get closer, which would be helpful for Guoxing in the future. However, she was afraid of Wang Wei, fearing he might still harbor resentment about the last time she reported him.
Xiao Xiao remained silent, and Wang Wei sneered, "We didn't come to your house. Last time, you specifically went to Secretary Qin to report us. If you don't want to acknowledge Xiao Xiao, my wife and I also don't want any relationship with you."
"But..." Xiao's mother wanted to say something.
Wang Wei's gaze turned cold, and he responded with a questioning tone, "What else do you want to say?"
Xiao's mother shrank her neck, "Nothing... nothing."
At this moment, Xiao Sanmei heard Wang Wei's voice and quickly walked out, "Brother-in-law, Second Sister, where are you going?"
Xiao Xiao said, "Just taking a stroll. Don't forget about the matter in the county this afternoon."
Sanmei responded, "Rest assured, I won't forget."
Xiao's mother gave Sanmei an unfriendly look, but Sanmei acted as if she hadn't seen it, "You two go ahead and walk around. I'll come find you after I tidy up in the afternoon."
Xiao Xiao nodded, and she and Wang Wei walked away.
Once they were far enough, Xiao's mother couldn't help but complain to Sanmei, "You, this girl, why didn't you invite your second sister in for a visit?"
Sanmei looked at Xiao's mother expressionlessly.
Feeling guilty under Sanmei's gaze, Xiao's mother asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Invite her in for what? You already said you don't acknowledge Second Sister. Why would she come to your door willingly?" Sanmei said with a hint of sarcasm.
Xiao's mother, unable to maintain her composure, said with an embarrassed face, "Why are you talking like this? Your dad said it was to avoid trouble. If your dad and I get implicated, what about Guoxing?"
