Professor Chen's face stiffened. How had Xiao Xiao become Professor Wang's student? If only she had chosen Computer Science initially. From their recent inquiry to discussion, he clearly sensed Xiao Xiao's deep understanding of computers.
"Professor Wang, the physics field has so many students, but look at our Computer Science department—hardly anyone comes to study. The value of computers, if not understood by others, is surely recognized by you. Abroad, they have already developed the third generation of computers, with computing speeds beyond our imagination. Can you bear to see the gap between Huaguo's and foreign computer levels widen further?" Professor Chen looked earnestly at Professor Wang. Professor Wang was his senior in terms of hierarchy; a direct approach would not work, so he opted for a more gentle strategy.
Professor Wang waved his hand dismissively, "Xiao Chen, don't say this to me. Computers are important, but physics is even more crucial. Fundamental research in physics can be considered the cornerstone of modern scientific research. Xiao Xiao, come here, follow me." It seemed to him that Professor Chen, who was only supposed to guide Xiao Xiao, was now competing with him for the student.
Seeing Professor Wang's shift from calling him "Professor Chen" to "Xiao Chen," the corner of Professor Chen's mouth twitched. Though younger, his contributions were no less significant than Wang's, and this form of address was clearly a sign of annoyance.
But he was willing to endure it if it meant Xiao Xiao would study computer science with him.
He pushed up his glasses and looked sincerely at Professor Wang, "Professor Wang, physics is indeed important, but Xiao Xiao's talent is clearly in computers. Forcing her to study physics is wasting her potential."
"What?" Professor Wang doubted his ears, pointing at Professor Chen, he exclaimed, "Do you know how talented Xiao Xiao is in physics? If she really follows you into computer science, that would be the real waste! Old Xu, why are you just standing there? Don't you see someone is trying to poach from our field?"
Professor Xu, observing the tense exchange between Professor Chen and Professor Wang, elevated his assessment of Xiao Xiao. As the leader of the team that developed Huaguo's second-generation computer, Chen would not be interested in just any student.
His eagerness to compete with Professor Wang for Xiao Xiao indicated her swift mastery of computer science.
However, as a member of the physics community, he could not simply watch Xiao Xiao be swayed into studying computer science by Professor Chen.
"Professor Chen, Xiao Xiao's field is physics, and her interest in computers is just a hobby. Don't distract her with such remarks. Xiao Xiao, come here, we are heading to the lab," Professor Xu kindly beckoned her over.
"A mere hobby? To reach such a level from a 'hobby' shows her talent in computers. Professors Xu and Wang, Xiao Xiao really suits computer science. Do you know, during our discussion, I was inspired and came up with new ideas for the third-generation computer. If Xiao Xiao follows me, we might develop the third-generation computer very soon. Believe me, the role of computers extends far beyond calculation; it will exceed your expectations," Professor Chen became increasingly passionate as he spoke.
"But Xiao Xiao's talent in physics is superior, enough. I won't let you take my student away. Xiao Xiao, follow me," he looked at Professor Chen as if he was a kidnapper.
"Let's ask Xiao Xiao herself then," seeing that neither Professor Wang nor Professor Xu would relent, Professor Chen shifted tactics, offering a gentle smile to Xiao Xiao, "Trust me, if you study computer science with me, you'll have a bright future. Of course, it's up to you. All of us respect your decision."
