GOING TO SCHOOL ON Reaping day sucks, everyone in the building radiates with nervousness it floods the school halls like the rats in the power stations. Raelyn was nervous not just for her but for her mother who'd only just lost her husband and the idea she could lose her daughter as well was something that plagued Raelyn's mind daily. Alba Watts had not taken the death of her husband well having thrown herself deeper into her work and all around neglecting her daughter.
Raelyn considered herself lucky as she was at an age where she could take care of her own basic needs and nobody would be any wiser to the truth, the sixteen-year-old took care of herself so well she began to miss the presence of her mother less and less as the days went on.
Miss Cole the maths teacher turned and looked up at the clock that hung above her desk, a look of dread and worry fell across her face, in five minutes she would dismiss her class so they could head home and get ready for the Reaping, Miss Cole knew their was a chance she could lose one of her students but a brave smile appear on her face.
A loud cough echoed across the room causing all the eyes in the room to fall on Miss Cole. "Now, we have a few minutes before dismissal and I just wanted to wish you all good luck at the Reaping"Miss Cole told her class as tears began to brim in her eyes.
The bell rung signaling the end of the school, the students moved slower than normal none of them rushing to whatever fate was in store for them, Raelyn stood up and carefully flung her old worn-out backpack over her shoulder it was falling apart at the seams but she couldn't part from it due to it once belonging to her farther.
Raelyn slowly walked out of the classroom, a feeling of dread washed over her, it was like a warning from the universe that something was going to happen to her.
She should have realized what it was sooner than she did.
THE FRONT DOOR TO THE Watts's house squeaks open its hinges rattling in the process, the door shuts behind her with a thud before she is engulfed in complete silence.
"Mom! Mom!"Raelyn calls out, she looks around to try and locate her mother who would have gotten off early due to the Reaping.
A defeated sigh escaped her mouth, she'd hoped her mother would care enough about her for just one day but she guessed the grief was so overwhelming she couldn't be around her.
Raelyn climbed the old rickety staircase up to the second floor of the house, she walked into her bedroom and placed her backpack down onto her bed next to the Reaping clothes she had placed neatly on her bed earlier this morning. Raelyn quickly changed into her Reaping clothes before grabbing her hairbrush off her bedside table and walking over to the bathroom.
She began brushing out the tangles in her hair as she looked at herself in the mirror, she understood when looking at herself why her mother had trouble being around her after the passing of Raelyn's dad, the sixteen-year-old was a dead ringer for her dad, the same blonde hair and baby blue eyes, same smile when they laugh. Even the small things they did the same like tieing their shoes or hating maths.
