"Mom, I can't keep watching your kids...I have a life of my own, you know and I'm trying to work to make money for all of us." Camila stated, she had just been called for a night shift and her mother was already drunk.
"Just sort them out yourself," Her mom mumbled, taking a sip of the beer in her hand.
"Your work called."
"What did you say?"
"I told them you were sick." Her mom groaned.
"You can't keep saying that! They're going to know you're lying." She growled out, her voice raspy as she reached for her pack of cigarettes with a shaky hand.
"Mom, I need to go can you please just keep an eye on Jenna and Jamie?"
Her siblings were twins, they were adorable little things who were so full of life. All they wanted to do was play with dolls and cars and play dress up with each other, it's all they ever wanted to do.
"Oh whatever!" Her mom yelled. "I don't give a fuck."
She bang to grumble things under breath until she placed the cigarette in her mouth and kept quiet.
Camila just watched with sad eyes before she turned, grabbed her keys and left their apartment.
She had never gotten her license, her mom never had the money to pay for lessons and her dad wasn't around that much besides when he came home for paperwork. So she was stuck to walking to work.
The walk was tolerable, it was only about fifteen minutes. The only downside was that she had to walk through a creepy, deserted alleyway with hundreds of rats and spiders.
She made it to the small deli she worked at quickly, going to the back and finding her manager.
"Oh, hey Cam." Kyle said, smiling her way. "You ready for tonight?"
"As long as I can eat the donuts that are left." Camila smiled back.
"Of course you can, sweetheart." He smiled weirdly.
He always had this weird feeling that followed him. Camila always tried to push past it since he was her boss but honestly, it was a bit hard.
"Okay...! Well, I'll see you whenever I work next."
One thing Camila appreciated about Kyle was that when her mom was too out of it to even stand up, he would give her a paid day off so she could watch her siblings, she would only have to work an extra hour the next shift which wasn't bad at all.
"Alright. Bye, Cam." He said, looking her up and down as he left the store.
She locked the door behind him so she could have five minutes to take off her jacket and put her stuff into her locker, then she unlocked the door and waited behind the counter.
In all honestly, she hated working the night shift. The streets of Las Vegas were dangerous at night, especially in the area she lived in. Drugs littered literally everywhere along with shady people lurking around every corner. She really hated not being in the luxury area of Vegas, but she was happy she had a roof over her head.
There were a few customers here and there, some sweet and some rude old men who were just looking for rolling papers.
Camila grabbed one of the pink donuts from the contained shelf and took a bite out of it, scrolling on her phone as she watched the security cameras every now and again.
She turned up the radio, her phone was starting to lose battery and she was planning on listening to music on the way home, and that's when she noticed the movement on the security cameras.
A man was stumbling towards the doors of the deli with a sharp knife in his hands. "Oh fuck."
Camila panicked, checking underneath the counter where Kyle kept his gun just in case of emergency. He'd made sure all of his workers were licensed to use it, Camila was still scared though.
She watched as the man threw the knife, so she took her hand from the gun under the counter but still kept her arm close to it and listened to the bell on the door ring to signal someone had come in.
Panting and grunting sounded in her ear as she turned to face the man, he was young. And covered in blood, might I add.
He grabbed a roll of bandages with his non-bloody hand, and Camila took note of the fact his other hand had been sliced clean open and deep.
"Woah- you need help with that?" She asked, standing up.
"No- just let me- fuck - pay. I have places to be." The man groaned out, keeping his head down as if he were trying to avoid something. "How much?"
"Err, $3.95." He handed her a $20 bill and grabbed the roll and left. "Your change, dude!"
"Keep it!" He yelled before he was gone.
"What the fuck just happened?" Camila mumbled to herself, holding the paper in her hand as she exchanged it and shoved the change in her pocket.
