"Kai!"

Illy hurried to catch up with the small girl as she headed down the hallway and stopped at her door.

"Please wait. I've been wanting to talk to you."

Kai turned to gaze up at her with empty brown eyes, head tilted to the side.

"About what?"

"Everything. What you did. What I did..."

"Some things are better left unsaid."

"Then why did you leave me that note?"

Kai paused in the middle of opening her door, staring ahead for a long moment before she let the door swing open.

"Come in."

Illy bit down on her lower lip, following the girl inside and letting her eyes skim over the "room" which wasn't really a room at all.

The door had led into a vast forest of flowers and trees that seemed to go on forever over rolling hills as far as the eye could see.

She took in the breathtaking view for a moment, admiring the light airy breeze dancing around them, carrying the fragrant smell of wildflowers, and the fat white clouds slowly drifting across the perfect, azure sky above.

"It's beautiful," Illy murmured, more to herself than anyone. She reached out to touch a particularly striking flower, its petals a deep, velvety purple, and felt a strange sense of peace wash over her.

"It's where I come to think."

It was a place of escape, a refuge from the chaos of their shared reality. And yet, Illy couldn't shake the feeling that beneath the beauty lay something darker, something that Kai had yet to reveal.

She followed awkwardly behind as she was led to a large oak tree where one of its massive branches were supporting two swings.

Kai sat on the left swing, her short legs dangling over the sharp decline and Illy swallowed her fear of heights to sit next to her.

"Nothing feels real anymore," She spoke up after some time.

"Maybe nothing ever was," Kai replied, kicking her legs back and forth, "When your inner world feels more tangible than 'reality' what does it all mean? And does anything even matter?" She met Illy's gaze, "Whether you're in here or out there, it all hurts the same."

Illy stared at her for a long moment, struck by the depth beneath her otherwise blank expression. Kai might look like a child, but she harbored a lot of wisdom and with a perspective that could only have come from first hand experience.
