POV LIZZIE
I hold her into my arms, feeling her trembling against me. The man in front of us takes a look at her with a totally shocked expression.
"If you don't back up, I'll have to call the cops, sir." I warned him, taking my gaze out of Eileen for only a couple of seconds.
He scoffed, motioning his hands in an ironic way. "Yeah? And you're doing what with these pussies?" The man growled, gazing between the three of his children and me.
I hear a whine behind us, so I turn, only to see Anthony holding his baby sister, grasping on their older sister's shoulder.
"Sir, I-" He steps back off the room, closing the door with a thud before I could say anything else.
"Is he gone?" Ava asks her sister in a whisper. Eileen glared at me with tears in her eyes, making me smile reassuringly at her. I nod slowly. She copies my gesture to the little girl.
I look at the three kids while my heart throbs with fear. I take a deep breath while I caress the girl's hands.
"Uhm, why don't we...why don't we go to my house, huh? It's gonna be fun. We have a bunch of snacks, and we can even watch some movies." I tried suggesting. The last thing I want is to leave these kids here. It's not safe at all.
Eileen looks at me, her face stained with tears and her cheeks red because of the whole crying. "No, Elizabeth, it's alright." She whispers, looking inside my eyes.
"Please. Just for a while. Plus, you're sick and could use some warm hugs and snacks." I say, pinching her cheeks slightly, making her grin. I see her glaring at her feet and then looking back at me with a small chuckle. She mumbled an 'okay', poking her brother playfully.
"What do you guys think?" She asks the two kids, her voice low, but trying to have it strong. The both of them nod with a smile. I grin at them, noticing Anthony staring at me shyly. I smile at him in a comforting way, standing straight, offering my hand for them.
None of them holds into my hand, but I don't feel bad for it. I just met them, and I hope soon they can trust me more. Even Ava, who seems to really like me, just held her sister's leg while crying quietly. It was a big moment, that's for sure.
We start walking to my car in silence. Our steps are heavy, and I make sure to check on everything around us to make sure there's no danger close. The kids get in the car, and the three of them squished in the back seats. If that's what makes them comfortable enough, I'm happy with it.
I turn the engine on and start driving slowly. My heart is still beating fast, but probably not even close to how these children are. I take a look at the mirror, checking on them.
"Everything alright back there?" I ask them, smiling through the mirror, making sure they can see me. In response, Eileen grins at me. I can see how tired she is through her eyes. Her face is a little pale, and her eyes linger a little too much in only one space.
The silence we're in is far from uncomfortable, I could say, more like relived. All of our breaths are steady by now, just like our heart rhythm. My house is not that far from here, so we don't take too long to get there. I look back at the kids on the back seats and glare at the three tired faces. All three of them have their eyes narrowed, almost falling asleep. It's not late in the night, more like 5:30pm, but it was probably too much for one day only. I smile at them. They look better now.
I park in my garage, opening my door and heading to open their door and help them settle. When I open the door, none of them seem to be aware of much of it. On the seat closer to me is Eileen, followed by Ava and then Anthony, on the other window.
