POV LIZZIE

I slowly walked back to the kitchen after I excused me from the police officer. I lightly lick my lips in nervousness. What am I supposed to say to them? That I'm giving them back to the man that just called them a bunch of names and abuses them on a daily basis? That's definitely not right.

" You alright, Lizzie?" Ava's sweet voice asks me, and I look at the two sisters. Eileen holds Ava on her arms, but her attention is completely on me. She can probably see through my anxious eyes right now, so she opens her mouth slightly to say something.

"Who was it?" She asks me with a tone of suspiciousness. I take a step closer to them, so I'm close enough to touch them in comfort. I take a deep breath and look down at my shoes before saying a thing.

"Well, a cop is by the door. He was asking for the three of you." I explain to them, checking if they already have an idea of what I'm talking about. For what it looks, Eileen had already discovered. She twisted her lips a little and looked down at the floor while playing with her sister's hand.

"What is it, Ellie?" The little girl asks, confused. Her gaze alternates between her sister and I.

"We've got to go home." She whispers, not taking her eyes up. "Can't you do anything?" She finally meets my eyes. I sent her a sad smile, letting her know the answer.

"I swear, baby, I'm trying to think of something. But I think this time that's the way we stand for now." I tell the two girls in front of me. They stare at me, different expression among their faces.

"Please. Just a few more hours away from there." Eileen whispers again, lowering her gaze.

I bite the inside of my cheek. It's almost like I feel my heart breaking into little pieces. I step closer to them, reaching for them. The kid stares at my hand and holds onto it. Eileen, however, shooks her head and stares at me, then takes a deep breath.

"Let's go, Ava. We'll get Anthony and go." She clears her throat and says. My eyebrows furrow with the quick mood transition.

Ava looks at her sister, and then me, trying to figure out what to do. I show her a sad smile, telling her it's okay. They both start to walk away, but I hold into Eileen's sleeve.

"Call me if any of you need anything. Please." Her eyes meet mine for a minute. The ends of her mouth curl into a soft, sad smile, and then she looks down.

"Alright." She tells me with an indifferent tone. She hands me her phone so I can put my number in it.

I quickly typed my phone number while sending her fast gazes, checking on her. As I finish, I give her phone back, and she then puts it in her pocket.

"Bye, Lizzie." Ava says, waving at me while we head into the living room, where Anthony seems to just have woken up.

"Can we come back another time, Lizzie?" The little boy asks me, his eyes slightly widen. I smile brightly at him, which makes his eyes light up.

"Of course you can. Then we can watch lots of movies and eat so much candy and everything." I told him, trying to make them feel safer. Anthony gets up fast, and in a second, his arms are wrapped around me. I gasped in surprise but hugged him back tightly.

We hear a knock on the door, so we get apart.

"Everything is going to turn out okay. Alright?" I tell them. But I can't lie. I feel like a needle is coming right into me. I don't quite believe in what I'm saying. But I can't just say to these children that I think they're not gonna be fine, although it breaks my heart completely doing what I'm doing.

We walk to the door, where the officer is waiting impatiently for us.

"Well, let's get these kids home, huh?" He smiles at them. Clearly, he doesn't know the situation. I'd tell him, I really would, but I've got no proof. He wouldn't believe me. Plus, to him, I'm the lady who took the kids inside her house without their parents knowing. "Remeber this, Mrs.Olsen. If you do this again, the parents may want to get a protective order." He tells me and leaves. I just can't believe that this is all happening right now. What a mess.

I watch them as they get in the car. The father is on the front seat, and the three kids  get into the backseat. Eileen is the last one to enter. Before doing it, she looks at me. I star back at her, trying to show an encouraging grin. She sighs and gets in the car.

As the car fades in the end of the street, I feel my eyes wet. I quickly blink these tears away. They're gonna be fine. They have to. I'll make sure they will, as soon as possible.

POV EILEEN

Me, Ant, and Ava get in the car. Dad is on the front seat, constantly looking back at us through the mirror. It's really uncomfortable. I shift my position to the side, trying to get a better one.

"You should tell us when you guys are getting out of home. I was worried." He suddenly speaks. While he says it, I can't help but notice the soft tone he's using. One I had never heard before. It gives me the creeps.

"There you go, Mr. Martin." The officer tells him, stopping in our street, but a couple houses away from it.

"Thank you, officer. Hopefully, we won't have to see you again. Right, my loves?" He jokes around, and it almost makes me sick. I fake laugh and take a quick stare at both of the men.

The LAPD car starts to disappear from our sight, so Dad starts to drag us to the apartment.

"Let's go. Fast." He commands while holding into the collar of my shirt, and Anthony's too. Ava looks at it with widen eyes, but I reach for her hand, trying to comfort her. I mouth her that it's okay, letting her know that I'm fine.

He drags us up to the stairs, where we enter our apartment. Dad let go of us when we got there, and he closed the door, heading straight for the couch, where he reached for a half-empty bottle of beer, probably warm already, and starts to drink it. There are way more of these on the table, which he keeps reaching for.

We stand there for a while, figuring out what to do. I take a last stare at him before turning to Ava, who's been pulling my sleeve to get my attention.

"Where's mum?" She whispers, looking to the bedroom, which looks unoccupied. I raise my brows. Why is she still at the hospital? Is she even at the hospital, or did Dad just make that up. Suddenly, he just laughs hard.

"She's not coming back." He keeps chuckling and shooking his head. My heart seems to freeze, and it's like I stopped breathing for a moment.

"W-what do you mean?" I stutter, feeling the clear lack of air in my voice.

He looks at me, lingering his gaze, and then smiling.

"Calm down, darling. She's not dead. Yet." He tells me, with his voice clearly getting the effects from the drink. I swallow in relief. "Although the doctors can't do a thing for her anymore." He sarcastically laughs. A shiver goes through my spine."That stupid hoe of your mother didn't even manage to get her meds right. Now the fucking doctors can't fo a fucking thing. Isn't that thoughtful of her?" He walked closer to us, each second his voice getting into a higher volume.

My lips quiver when he gets less than a meter from us. I lightly push Ava and Anthony back, making the gap between them and Dad bigger.

I'm paralyzed while the only thing that man could do is look inside my eyes. His own didn't have anything inside. They looked completely empty. He was expressionless. The only thing he managed to do was to lick the side of his mouth, where a bit of beer escaped when he tried to get another sip of the drink.
