Buck walked into Maddie's apartment, balancing a tray of coffees in one hand and trying to manage the front door with the other. Maddie appeared from the kitchen, her face lighting up with a smile at seeing her brother."Hey, Buck."
"Hey, Mads," he set the coffee down on the table before cautiously looking around the room. "Chim's not here, right?"
Maddie shook her head, giving her brother a weird look. "No, it's just me. He brought Jee-Yun to daycare."
They moved to the living room, Buck handing her one of the cups before sinking into the couch. Maddie followed, watching him closely. "Alright, spill. What's bothering you?"
Buck sighed, taking a long sip of his coffee as he gathered his thoughts. "It's about Eddie," he began, his voice heavy with emotion. "I don't even know where to start."
Of course it was about Eddie, thought Maddie. It was always about Eddie. She had seen the way Buck's eyes would light up whenever he talked about him, and the way his face would fall when he mentioned anything troubling about him. Their bond was special, undeniable even, and Maddie had always sensed there was more to their relationship than either of them let on.
"Start at the beginning," Maddie suggested gently. "What happened?"
Buck leaned back, staring at the ceiling as he recounted the events that had led to his current state. His mind raced, reliving every moment with Eddie, every touch, every word exchanged, every orgasm. He remembered the warmth of Eddie's skin against his, the way his heart would race with excitement whenever they were together.
He had always struggled with relationships, feeling like he never quite fit or that he was too much for anyone to handle. With Eddie, it was different. There was a natural ease between them, a bond forged through shared experiences and mutual understanding. Buck had thought he finally found someone who truly got him, someone who could see past his flaws and still care for him. But now, that was all falling apart.
"It started about a month ago. We went out to the bar after shift with the whole team. Eddie and I, we were both a bit drunk, and one thing led to another."
Buck took a pause, before letting out a laugh at his next words.
"We had sex in the back of his truck."
Maddie's eyes widened in shock, but she couldn't help the amused smile that tugged at her lips. "Seriously?" she asked, excitement in her voice. "And then what?"
"And then we decided to keep it casual. We made this whole set of rules on a post-it note. We thought it would keep things simple, keep us from getting hurt."
Maddie leaned in, her curiosity piqued. "Rules? What kind of rules?"
Buck sighed, his expression growing more serious. "You know, stuff like 'no feelings,' 'keep it casual,' 'keep it to ourselves'. It was fine at first. Actually, it was great. But things started to change. I started to feel more, and I thought maybe Eddie did too."
Maddie listened intently, trying her best not to interrupt him. So this is what it was. She had suspected something might be going on between them, but hearing Buck confirm it filled her with an odd sense of relief.
She could see the hurt in Buck's eyes, the conflict between what he had hoped for and the reality he was now facing. She squeezed his hand reassuringly, urging him to continue.
"And then a few days ago," Buck said, his voice trembling slightly, "we had this huge fight in the hospital parking lot. Eddie... he told me he had a panic attack because he's in love and scared. I thought, maybe, he was talking about me. But then he didn't say anything, and I...I couldn't handle it. So I ended things right there."
