69 followers is such an underrated (and childish) milestone!! Also, it's been so long (sorry) that you might want to reread the previous chapters.

I started my day selfishly without going out of my way to be nice to my brother. I basked in the freedom that I had this morning. 'Who knew that being considerate would be so taxing'  I prepared myself a grand breakfast consisting of all my favorite breakfast foods.

'Poor Meredith. Housing Derek for, what is it so far, a week. If they like each other that much, they should enjoy every moment together.'

Walking into work with a clear head and a bright smile on my face felt so foreign to me now. 'Don't get me wrong, I love my brother, I do but I need alone time every once in a while. Nancy never understood the thought of me needing time to myself.'

After receiving my patient charts and making my usual rounds and check-ups, I was paged by Dr. Burke to an exam room. The patient there was named Devoe but wanted to be called Esther. I respected her wishes to a tee.

She is very open about her religion as an orthodox Christian even though her parents don't seem to live that lifestyle. She came in with an excessive heart murmur and it seemed that she was already on antibiotics, all based on her chart.

"Hey Esther, I'm Dr. Shepherd and I'm going to be working with Dr. Burke here on your condition." I introduced. "I just need to listen to your heart for myself quickly."

"Go ahead, everyone listens to it these days." She deadpanned very sullenly.

Listening to her heart alone, I can hear the weak, tired valve that's so close to giving up.  I looked to Dr. Burke, "Do you have a plan for the transplant?"

"I have Karev looking into it as the patient refuses to go along with the pork swine valve." He answered.

"Okay, so we find a different animal that can help out." I looked back to Esther, "That okay?" I asked for reassurance.

"It's fine, anything but a pig will do."

"I'll let you and your parents know if we come up with anything," I said calmly before heading out.

I was working in my lab, helping the lab techs while simultaneously researching another valve that could be used. 'Above and beyond like always.' I overheard the techs gossiping about some psychic who's getting treatment here. He predicted a patient dying earlier. 'Why is it that every day brings something different? Can we go back to simple times? Please? Please?!

'At least it's not super boring here. Silver linings.' As I thought about it a surgical intern walked in.

"I need the blood work for a patient, she's pregnant and also has breast cancer." This intern was all business. No time for pleasantries, not even a hello.

"Do you have the name of said patient, I can't just give you confidential information based on that alone." I'm just bored. I knew of this patient and handled her blood work myself. 'Yes, Bailey scares me still. What about it.'

"Seriously, Dr. Shepherd. I'm not in the mood for small talk right now." She exasperated. "Fine, here." I handed her a file filled with the patient's results. "Just wanted to get some type of friendly nature out of you. My mistake." I turned back to work.

"Sorry, Dr. Shepherd. The psychic case just bothered me more than I liked to admit." She admitted.

"It's fine, not everyone is as talkative as me. I understand that, but you should probably go. Wouldn't want to hold you up."

"Yeah, thanks."

I feel as though we silently had a conversation in just a few seconds of silence. We came to an understanding easily.

I was suddenly paged to Esther's room. It wasn't a 911, yet I still hurried there.

"What's going on here?" I asked as Karev looked toward me with a proud smile on his face.

"I managed to find an alternative valve for Esther: a cow valve and it's more beneficial being that it'll last longer than the pig." Alex gleamed. "And you talked to the family about it without consulting the attending in charge of the case. Me! You're off the case Karev." Burke said wiping the proud smirk off of Karev's face.

"Woah, Burke I think you're being a bit irrational here. He got a little ahead of himself and wanted to share it with the patient, who I assume is perfectly fine with this new plan, right?" I debriefed.

"Right." Burke nodded at my words. "Okay, so he missed a step, but he did his job nonetheless. Give him a break." I defended Karev.

"Fine, but you need to find a rabbi for the patient Karev. She requested it."

"Consider it done! Thanks." Karev ran off with a skip in his step.

"What's going on with you?" I questioned Burke. "Since when do you care about my well-being?" He shot back.

"Since you've never done a cow valve transplant before, I assume that you're a little shaken up about it." As I said that, Burke looked at me with wide eyes.

"How do you know I've never done this procedure before?"

"Because if you had, then you would've thought of it immediately instead of having Karev look up alternate methods all day." It was pretty obvious honestly.

"Okay, so you want to rub it in that you know something I don't." He breathed out.

"No, not at all. I haven't done this procedure either, but there's a first time for everything. And I happen to know of a surgeon who has done this before. I can contact him, and get him to walk us through the surgery. It's okay to have help, dude." I explained.

"Fine, contact that surgeon, and we'll do this."

The surgery was a success and Esther should recover without any complications. I hadn't seen my brother or Meredith all day, so I just walked out of this hospital after this surprisingly easy day. I went home and ordered takeout since I can't be bothered to cook again. Normally, Derek and I would stop for some food as we went home. Since he's ditched me, I cooked for myself all week. 'Maybe I should get a pet of some kind, anything to make this place less empty.'

After eating a sad dinner most likely prepared by some sad teenager, I went to bed and mentally prepared myself for the next random event in my life.

DONE!! I GRADUATED AS WELL! So, I've been enjoying my free time for a while. I reread the earlier chapters of this story and noticed that I made Y/n kinda egotistical, which is not the case. Most of the time it seemed that way, it was pure sarcasm. I even had him be nice to Burke to make up for it. (No one cares about Burke, but I feel like I did something.)

I'm working on a story about the vampire diaries now, but don't fret!! This story is my baby and I will keep updating. Maybe not frequently, but it will be done. Of course, more information will be posted on my conversations tab in my profile, so keep an eye on that! Until next time,
