Tuoba Yu {11 years ago, Ping City}

The dark room was hell on earth. Rats scurried across the floor, searching for the smallest sign of food or water. Light was absent, but could occasionally be seen as people walked by. The silence and frigid temperatures only added to the isolation. This is no place for a young prince. I rub my hands together in a feeble attempt to keep warm. How long have I been stuck here? Several hours feel like days in this enclosed space.

"Please, let me out!" I cried. "Someone, please help! I am Prince Nan'an of Wei. You cannot do this to me!" After a few minutes of screaming, I sit quietly in a corner to think. It's been almost 3 whole months since I was sent here last- that's a new record. I remember everything that led to this punishment in the first place.

Today marked the 1 year anniversary since mother's death. I could still hear her screams as father ordered she be taken away. Treason against the emperor was served with the highest punishment in the land- there was no going back. Now, I was left in the hands of Noble Consort Lu. She had certainly left her mark on me- in more ways than one.

I spent all day preparing a ceremony to honor my mother's life. I picked out her favorite flowers, foods, and even a song to present on this tragic day. However, Consort Lu was not supportive.

"How dare you mourn that backstabbing traitor?" She shrieked.  We were on the palace grounds, by the gardens. I knew mother would enjoy being remembered here.

"It's only been a year. Please Consort Lu, just let me say good-bye," I said.

"No. You are much better off without that woman. Besides, you have me now, and I'm your mother. I'm the one you should love unconditionally."

"You are not my mother!"

She responded with by slapping me hard across the face. "Enough! Servants, take him to the dark room."

I tried to break free from the eunches grip. "Consort Lu, you can't do this! I am his majesty's son!"

"Perhaps. But you are still a child with no real power or legitimacy. I advise you to behave, because no one is coming to save you. Take him!"

I screamed as the servants dragged me away.

It seemed like lifetimes later when the door finally opened, revealing a man. The light outlined his figure, making him seem taller and stronger. I tightly embraced my hero with all the strength I could muster.

"Jingmu! I'm so glad you are here; oh, I knew you'd come!"
