Nick Nelson:

"April" I said, "April" my voice called out desperately, waiting for my co worker to appear.

"Yea?" She answered curiously, walking into the office with a half eaten sandwich in her hand. "I need to go home, like now".

"Err, you only have an hour and a half left, what's up?" She asked curiously, taking a seat on the couch in front of me. "Charlie's just sent me a really panicking message, I-I need to leave" I said, my voice choked with emotion, my brain imagining all the bad things that could've happened.

"Oh dear, okay, I'll message coach Singh, let her know your leaving".

"Thank you, april" I said, grabbing my things and heading out the building, quickly escorting myself too the car.

Nick❤️:

Should I get Avery on the way home?
Charlie your scaring me now

Char🩷:

No no just leave Avery there I'll get her later
all I need is you
you need to be here
you need to be at home to hear this
I want to be the first to tell you before anybody else does.

That panicked me more.

I began the drive home, the feeling of my heart in my throat the whole way home, beating aggressively just so I could feel the burn.

I pulled into the driveway, bursting out the car doors and aggressively knocking on the door.

Charlie answered, his hands shaking. "Char? W-what the actual fuck has happend? Why aren't you at work?!" I asked, my voice in a quiver.

"Sarah called me" he said, his voice quiet and deep. "She wanted me too tell you".

"Fuck" I whispered, running my hand through my previously gelled hair, that was now free and messy locks. "I'm sorry baby" Charlie said, his hand was on my knee to calm it from shaking like it just was.

"I- he's dead?" I asked, my voice auto-tone. "Yeah, his uh, his funerals next Sunday".

"Can I go lie down?" I muttered.

"Yeah course Nick, do you need anything?" He asked generously. "No" I said getting up, "I'm fine".

"Are you sure? I could-"

"Charlie" I snapped, cutting him off. "'M fine, leave me alone, please?" I asked. He looked surprised, but hung his head low and nodded.

I wanted to apologise, but I didn't have the strength. I moped upstairs and straight into my room, throwing on old scraggy clothes that are far too big and getting into bed.

My mind was far too blank to think of anything, every thought that comes vanishing in seconds, the lines blurring over.

My dad, he was gone.

I didn't know why I was upset.

How I was upset.

Why I was so devastated about a life ending that never really appeared in mine?

I tossed and turned in my bed, sweat dripping from my forehead as I continuously couldn't drift off, until I did. Everything that was in my head closing and shutting down just for a few hours whilst my eyes rested.

3 hours later:

A pair of arms slithered around me, closely wrapping around my torso, I smiled.

" 'm sorry about earlier" I whispered, my eyes tearing up again. "I was just tired". "I know Nick".

"I tried making the contact, always making the first move and always being the first to try and organise things".

"I know, sweetheart".

"I always fucking tried!"

"Shhh calm down angel, I know you did".

I took a breath.

"I'm gonna go get Avery, Sarah's asked if she can come see you?".

I shivered, the thought of my mum seeing me like this. I mean, this is her ex husband too.

"She won't judge you, Nick, she's your mum".

Charlie spring:

Driving to Avery's nursery, I still couldn't shake over the fact that Stephane had passed away.

I mean, it was strange thinking about how I'd only seen him around 5 times whilst being with Nick, I didn't even really know the guy whatsoever.

I pulled into the parking lot, stepping out the car and immediately pulling my coat around my waist before the sudden cold air could bite my skin.

I walked into the reception, the room filled with bright colours and ordinary shapes. "Hello?" A sweet voice called. "Oh, hello there, I'm here to collect Avery Rae Nelson" I smiled.

"Ah, I see. This is an early collection?" She questioned.

"Yes, erm, family emergency" I blurted out. "Oh, I see. I hope everything's well. I'll get august to hand her out now".

"Thank you very much". I took a seat, waiting for Avery's one on one to come and do hand over with me. I opened my phone to a message from Sarah.

Sarah:

Hey Charlie! I got to yours, Nick immediately broke down, I'm rather worried about him to be honest. I don't know what the next step could possibly be?x

Charlie:

Hiya, I know how you feel. He snapped at me earlier out of pure anger, obviously I tried my best not to take it to heart knowing he's hurting.
I was planning on taking it him about possible counselling with Geoff? I'm unsure if he'd take it but I really think it would help him out x

Sarah:

I was thinking the exact same thing my love! I'll be leaving in a moment as he's saying he's getting in the shower x

Charlie:

Okay, goodbye Sarah thank you for your help x

Sarah:

No problem Charlie xx

"Mr spring?" August called. I can't wait for my name to be changed to Nelson in September.

"Hello there!" He smiled as I got up from my seat, "hi".

"Little Avery is over here if you'd like to come take a look and see what she's doing before we hand her her?"

"That sounds lovely!" I exclaimed. I quietly went through the gate, my footsteps camouflaging with the children's squeals.
