Bluey and Bingo sobbed; hearts broken at the loss of their father. As the sun set on this sad day, darkness fell over their souls.

Chilli emerged from the caravan; eyes red from her own tears. But seeing her daughters so distraught tore at her heartstrings.

She gathered them close, stroking their fur. "Shh, it's alright. Mummy's here." But they could only weep harder.

"I'm sorry I left you alone in your grief," Chilli said softly. "I was overwhelmed with my own sadness and didn't see yours. That was wrong of me."

Bluey looked up with watery eyes. "It just hurts so much, Mum. I miss Papa!"

"I know, my darling, I miss him too." Chilli embraced them tighter. "But you both need to cry as much as you want. It's the only way the pain will start to heal."

Bingo hiccupped. "Will...will it ever stop hurting?"

Chilli wiped her tears and smiled sadly. "One day, not as sharp. For now, let it all out. I'm here for you always, as he would want."

The girls cried themselves to sleep in her arms under the stars, comforted by her love surrounding their broken hearts like a warm blanket.

As the night drew on, Chilli gently rocked her sleeping daughters in the window of the caravan. Gazing at the star-scattered sky, she found herself singing softly:

"Dark though the night, my light you shall be
Your love is my north, my guide on land and sea
These tears we cry shall nourish the roots
Where love and joy once more may take shoot

Though the years stretch long 'til hearts heal their scars
Each beat you still feel, a spark glimpsed in stars
Take rest now my loves, no more tears tonight
Into dreams escape on hope's wingéd flight"

Chilli looked down to see Bluey and Bingo sigh peacefully in sleep. Her own eyes grew heavy with sorrow's weariness. But she took comfort knowing their mourning meant Bandit's memory was in good paws.

As slumber soft fell, in the ether it seemed she heard Bandit's whisper on the breeze: "Have courage, my treasures. Though dark waters may rise, together your Gypsy hearts will weather the skies."

The horses nickered softly outside. Dawn's first light glowed rose on the horizon, promising a new day. And Chilli breathed deep, finding solace that for her pups, she too would always be light to guide them home.
