Are dreams truly just dreams?

Gill POV:

It was quarter past 10 at night when Gilly Cobbler was awoken from her sleep by an odd dream. The little six-year-old crept down the stairs, her nightgown grazing each step, hoping any of her parents were still downstairs. Lucky for her, her dad was over at the kitchen table, going over some papers. He hadn't yet seen her; Gilly was very good at being quiet.

"Daddy?" Her little voice startled her dad, but he quickly relaxed once he realized it was just Gilly.

"Gilly? What are you doing up so late, baby?" Hal asked, walking towards the girl and then kneeling to her level.

"I couldn't sleep. I had a bad dream." The dream wasn't a bad one, to be honest. It was weird—weird enough to leave Gilly genuinely spooked.

"A bad dream, huh?" "Yeah...Daddy, I'm scared." Tears began to fill the little girl's eyes.

"Hey, it's okay. It was just a dream." Hal wiped his daughter's tears with his thumb. At six, Gilly swore she was the most independent kid ever, but seeing her like this made Hal glad that his little girl was still there. No matter how old she got, she'd always be Daddy's little girl, his first baby.

"Alright, come here, shorty. I'll take you to bed, and you can tell me all about that scary dream of yours." Hal picked up Gilly and walked up the stairs back to her room. In any other circumstance, Gilly would've thrown a fit at being called short, but tonight she was too tired and too scared to do it.

Once she was back in bed, all snuggled up with her favorite teddy bear, Gilly began to tell her dad about the dream.

"Well, at the start, I was in a field with pretty flowers. There were tulips, Mommy's favorite. The day was pretty, and the birds were singing. There were also bunnies. But then it got dark; the flowers were gone, and there were no birds or bunnies. It got really windy, and thunder began to strike. That's when I heard a voice call my name. I started running through the field. The voice was still calling me, and then I was in the woods, and right after that, I was in a castle. But the voice never stopped. But I recognized the voice, though. I just don't remember from where." Hal listened intently as Gilly recalled the dream, noticing that she had gotten frustrated with herself when she didn't remember where the voice came from. "Anyways, I was still running, but then I fell. I didn't even see a hole; I just fell. And that's when I woke up."

When she finished her story, Gilly was scared to look back at her dad. She was scared he'd think she'd gone mad. Gilly thought so herself, even if she was only six. To Gilly's surprise, her dad smiled and sat down next to her.

"Well, no wonder you were scared. That was quite the dream you had." Hal pulled Gilly closer to him and pressed a kiss on her head. "But you don't have to be scared, okay? I'm here for you, always."

Gilly smiled, no doubt about that crossing her mind. But suddenly, she frowned, remembering something she'd left out. "Wait dad. There's something else."

"Whats that?"

"Right before I woke up, the voice told me something. It told me, 'I'll come back when the time's right. In ten years' time, I'll be back, and you will be mine'."

Dread immediately crossed Hal's face. Living in the world they did, prophecies weren't an uncommon thing. Gilly didn't need to know that, though; she was still too little. So Hal decided not to give it much thought. After all, I could've been just a dream, and if not, ten years from now would be a long time. Much could happen in ten years.

"Don't listen to that; it was just a dream. I promise."

That night, Gilly Cobbler fell asleep in her father's arms.

That night, Hal Cobbler held his little girl a bit tighter.

RINGRINGRING

Gilly's head snapped up at the sound of the bell. She looked around to see all the kids around her packing up and going to lunch.

"You good, thief? You were passed out pretty hard." Gilly flinched at the voice but relaxed once she realized it was only Jax.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just didn't sleep much last night." Gilly told him. It wasn't really a lie; she had actually stayed up late studying, but it wasn't the full truth either.

Jax gave her a look. Gilly knew that look; she'd been getting the same look for the past four years.

"Jaxon, I'm fine. Really." She said plainly.

"Alright. I'm not saying I believe you, but I'll leave you be. I'm too hungry to argue about this; let's go."

Gilly rolled her eyes but followed behind him nonetheless. She wasn't hungry, though; the dream her short nap gave her took away her appetite.

It had come back; the voice that haunted her dreams when she was a little girl was back.

This time, though, it told her something different.

I'm back, and soon enough, you will be mine.
