Chapter 7

I'm still undecided if I will grab the opportunity working here in the hospital or not. Kasi naman I'm a senior architect sa isa sa pinakamalaking kumpanya sa Manila tapos sa hospital lang ang bagsak ko?

I mean no offense. But this isn't the working environment I want. I belong with pencil, drafting table, drawing board and whatnot.

Naupo si Mama sa tabi ko sa sofa. Tulog din si Papa. "Are you okay Jill?"

Huminga ako ng malalim. "To be perfectly honest with you Ma, no —"

Natawa si Mama. "I already figured." Umiling sya. "Your father and I already discussed this many this times but he won't listen."

"I bet." I agreed.

"But this hospital meant so much for him." My mother whisper in her dream state.

Now I'm curious. "What about this hospital?"

"Ang una kasing naging owner nitong Hospital at kaibigan nya, like best friend Jill." Paunang kwento ni Mama. "But Benjamin's family went bankrupt kaya napilitan silang ibenta to sa family ni Sara. Your father tried to acquire at least 70 percent of the share pero halos 20 lang ang nakakuha nya."

"So this is all about his best friend?"

Mother look at me sideway. "Yes but yours now."

"But I'm a senior architect Ma. Anong gagawin ko dito?" I almost beg. "If you guys help me, pwede akong magtayo ng sarili kong business dito sa Cebu. I just need a support and money."

Hinawakan ni Mama ang kamay ko. "We can do that." Medyo nabuhayan ako ng loob. "We will talk about this with your father once he gets out of the hospital."

Ang hirap kalabanin ng desisyon ni Papa dahil nga ka gagaling nya lang sa major operation. I'm sacred something bad happen to him kapag kinontra ko sya — my heart couldn't take it.

"Pagbigyan mo muna sya Anak." Pakiusap ni Mama.

"Wala din naman akong choice Ma." Medyo natawa ako kahit deep inside sobrang disappointed ako.

"I will help you with the money for your own company okay?" Pinisil nya ang kamay ko. "But for now dito ka muna sa hospital."

Para kay Papa, I will.

Tinawagan ko si Marrol to inform her about the hospital thingy at balak ko narin magresign. Sya muna ang bahala sa bahay ko sa Manila dahil baka matagalan pa ako makauwi.

"Don't worry about Coco." Sabi ni Marrol at pinakita nya ang alaga ko na pusa sa screen. "Say hi to your step mother."

Natawa ako. "Anong step mother? Coco is mine."

Gumalaw ang buntot ni Coco ng marinig ang boses ko. Kay Marrol ko kasi iniwan si Coco temporarily.

Yakap Yakap nya ang pusa. "Was yours."

"Mama!" Boses ni Winter.

Napatingin ako sa bata na nakapasok lang ng kwarto ka sunod si Manang Lena. "Oh gabi na ah —"

"Nagpupumilit po kasi yong bata na makita si Senora." Sagot ng ka tiwala namin.

Yumakap si Winter kay Mama. Para silang mag-Ina.

"Dapat natutulog ka na ah." Sabi ni Mama sa bata habang hinahanaplos nya ang mukha nito. "Alas nueve na."

"Pwede tabi tayo Mama?" Pakiusap ni Winter with puppy eyes.

How my mother could deny that? Impossible.

"Wait, sya yong sinasabi mo na inampon ng parents mo?" Tanong ni Marrol sakin.
