That's the girl who gave me the pomegranate seeds, so... what in the world is going on?

For a while, you were in utter disbelief. It was hard to wrap your head around the fact that you had actually died, but unless that whole interaction with Chisaki had just been one massive nightmare, then you were dead. Super-duper dead.

And also in the underworld, apparently.

It was incredibly distressing to know that you had actually passed away. Being in the underworld sure explained why everything was so damn dark, though. Everywhere you looked, it was nearly pitch-black, apart from a few pale lights scattered here and there, and a faint fog that seemed to sweep across the surroundings. It was too dark to see far into the distance, so the most you could do was keep your attention on the people right in front of you. Not just the girl you'd run into on campus. There was a man by her side as well.

Furthermore, both of them appeared to be sitting on thrones made almost entirely from thorn-like branches and a mixture of both human and animal bones.

Pomegranate seeds, the underworld, and now these two...

Ah. It had finally clicked.

"Hades and Persephone?" you couldn't help but blink. "That's who you are... right?"

Persephone replied with a delighted little giggle. "Who else would it be? Like I said, you're in the underworld now. I'm afraid you died, [Name]. All souls who have met their demise end up here sooner or later. Their actions are judged, and based on that, their fate is decided. Those who have lived relatively average lives, neither inherently good nor bad, are sent to the Asphodel Meadows. Elysium is of course reserved for those of pure heart and upstanding character, who devoted themselves to the pursuit of good. And last but certainly not least, there is Tartarus, where the most heinous souls are doomed to suffer the worst of punishments for all eternity."

"Um... yeah. I remember learning about all that."

You swallowed thickly. So, you really were dead. Did that mean you were about to be judged and sent to one of the three major parts of the underworld? You liked to think that striving to become a hero would earn you a place in Elysium, but you had no way of knowing for sure.

"The poor thing is scared stiff," Hades remarked, chuckling dryly. "Persephone, you really should get down to business. It isn't good to mislead her for too long."

What?

"Right," Persephone mused. She twirled a lock of red hair around her finger. "Say, [Name], do you remember when we met back at your school? I gave you something back then."

"The pomegranate seeds," you nodded. "And I... ate them."

Suddenly, you gulped.

"Uh-oh. Was I not supposed to do that?" you asked, panicking slightly. "At the time, I had no idea who you really were. D-Did I offend you somehow?"

"Not at all. Quite the opposite, actually." Persephone's grin grew wider. "As a matter of fact, in doing so, you have unwittingly saved yourself. I gave those seeds to you as a little gift, you see. There were six of them in total. That's exactly how many I ate when Hades gave offered them to me. From that moment onward, I became tied to the underworld, and Hades and I were married."

"Come on, dear," Hades sighed. "You're not still mad about that, are you? I just loved you so much. I was worried that you'd leave and never come back."

Persephone leaned over and pecked her husband on the cheek. "Of course not, silly. I'm so happy things turned out this way. We were meant to be together. It all worked out for the best."
