At first, everything was going according to plan. Sir Nighteye had used his Foresight on one the of the yakuza members a while back. It was what had enabled him to discover that Eri was being hidden within the Shie Hassaikai compound, and it had also given him a rough idea of what their underground base looked like. With him guiding the rest of you forward, you had a pretty good sense of where you were headed.
Unfortunately, the enemy refused to make things easy for you.
"The path! It's twisting and shifting around!"
"It's not Chisaki's doing," one of the heroes muttered. "This has to be another one of his underlings, Irinaka, but that guy's Quirk doesn't normally allow him to manipulate things on such a large scale. Shit. He must be using the Quirk-enhancing drug. There's no other explanation."
The semantics didn't really matter at this point, because to put it simply, your way forward had been blocked off, and no one knew where the hell they were supposed to go next.
"I-If the path keeps changing, we'll never reach our goal," Tamaki spluttered, growing paler by the second. "During that time, they can prepare countless escape routes. Dealing with all this... having to figure out what the best course of action is... I-I just can't. It's no good. I don't think I have what it takes to do this." He gripped at his hood and began shrinking on himself, trembling all the while. "At this rate, it's not only the girl that we won't be able to save, but we'll be goners too-"
"Tamaki."
You grabbed his hand before he could spiral any further. He let out a shaky gasp, but managed to look over at you, small tears blurring his gaze.
"Don't think like that," you said, then squeezed his fingers and smiled. "We're all here for a reason. There's so many of us, and together, I doubt there's anything we can't do. For this to work, we need you to not give up. You're important, Tamaki. And like I always say, you're so much stronger than you realize."
"[Name]'s right," Mirio nodded. "Tamaki, you are Suneater. Remember? Wear that name proudly, because you definitely deserve it."
Tamaki gulped, stole a quick glance towards your hand, which was still firmly gripping his, then finally raised his head.
"I'm... I'm sorry," he mumbled. "I just got a bit... overwhelmed."
"There's no need to apologize. Just keep doing what you've always done. You were with Kirishima and helped save all those people that were being attacked by that villain, right? Everyone here knows you've got what it takes. You just have to believe in yourself." Mirio patted his friend on the back, but instead of smiling the way he usually did, he faced forward towards the twisting path with a frown. "Besides, this is only a stopgap. It's clear they're just trying to buy time. No matter how much he warps the passage, as long as I know the general direction, I can get there. With my Quirk, I know I can."
Huh? Is he about to...?
Before you could even stammer out a protest, Mirio had already activated his Quirk and slipped through one of the walls, leaving the rest of you behind.
Sir Nighteye adjusted his glasses. "Normally, I would reprimand him for being impulsive and rushing ahead, but he's right that time is of the essence. All we can do is figure out a way to meet him there as quickly as possible."
It was rather fitting that, the moment he uttered those words, the floor disappeared from under your feet, and you were suddenly pulled down along with several others.
"Goddammit," Aizawa muttered, lifting his head. "The way back up is closed off. We've been separated from most of the other police officers."
You hadn't fallen very far. At the very least, the intention wasn't to kill you from sheer impact. These criminals probably had something else planned.
