The Shie Hassaikai raid had finally come to an end.
It had been a large-scale mission. There were other pro heroes fighting on the surface, like Ryukyu, for instance, not to mention the countless police officers and hero students that had also participated in the raid. Needless to say, plenty of people were injured in the process, but at the very least, there hadn't been any casualties. Everyone involved had lived to tell the tale.
To be honest, you were exhausted. You'd used your Quirk countless times today, and Chisaki's resistance to your powers had made it especially difficult near the end. It was a struggle just to hold your eyes open. Not only because you were so tired, but even now, you still couldn't shake the memory of how Chisaki had killed you. You'd put on a brave face while you were fighting him, but the trauma couldn't be so easily forgotten. There was a very real possibility that you could have died again. This time, for good.
I didn't die, though. And nobody else did, either.
You let out a weak, shuddering sigh. Everyone was safe. Eri had been rescued. It would probably take a while for her to overcome all of the horrible, twisted things she'd been forced to endure, but you felt hopeful that one day, she would be able to smile. It sounded like she was going to be placed in the care of Aizawa. Thanks to his Erasure, he could keep her Quirk in check and help her learn how to control it.
Unfortunately, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. This was an important mission that many had staked their lives on. Nobody had died, that much was true, but one person had suffered a heavy loss nevertheless.
Mirio. You weren't there to actually witness it, but apparently he'd been shot with the anti-Quirk bullets Chisaki had created. His Quirk had disappeared midway through his fight with Chisaki, before everyone else showed up. It was incredible that he'd even lasted that long, with no powers to fall back on. That was just how determined he'd been to save Eri.
"Tamaki," you called out. You'd already heard that he was safe, but it was nice to see it with your own eyes. He'd probably just checked in on Mirio. At the sound of your voice, he turned towards you, but there was no denying how downcast his expression was.
"...[Name]." Tamaki walked over to you, lips pressed into a thin, wobbly line. He was plenty injured himself, but he was well enough to walk around, at the very least. It didn't look like any of his injuries would cause long-term repercussions.
"Hey," you replied, straining a smile. "I'm glad you're alright. I knew from the start that you'd be able to take care of those villains. You did really well, Tamaki. You're just as strong as I thought you were."
Tamaki stared down at his feet, eyes dim. "Yeah, I'm... fine. But Mirio, he's... his Quirk is..."
"I know."
"It's just... he worked so hard, all his life, and now, it's-!"
"I know, Tamaki, I know. I'm so sorry."
You pulled him into your arms, allowing him to bury his face in the crook of your neck. He kept choking back whimpers, desperately resisting the urge to fully cry, but eventually, his emotions got the best of him.
He stayed there for a while, just sobbing within your embrace. You wanted to say that you regretted the fact that Mirio had gone ahead on his own, but if he hadn't done that, Chisaki would have escaped with Eri. Mirio had bought all of you enough time to arrive. Without his heroic sacrifice, this mission would have ended in failure.
Still, your heart ached-for both of them.
Perhaps not all hope was lost. It was unfair to place such a heavy burden on Eri's shoulders, especially when she'd already endured so much, but maybe one day, she could use her Rewind Quirk to restore Mirio's powers...?
