"Walk the path," Vulturis commanded, his voice cold. "If you falter, it means you are weak."
Ariah took a deep breath and stepped forward, her senses heightened. The snakes slithered around her feet, and every instinct screamed at her to flee. She moved cautiously, each step measured. The path seemed endless, the tension mounting with each step.
Halfway through, a large snake coiled itself around her ankle. Ariah froze, fear threatening to overtake her. Master Vulturis' voice cut through the terror. "You are weak, Ariah. Prove me wrong."
Summoning every ounce of courage, Ariah shook off the snake and continued. When she finally reached the end of the path, she was trembling, but she had made it. Her master's expression remained cold.
"Acceptable," he said, turning away. "But you have much to learn."
The second trial was even more daunting. Vulturis took her to a cliffside and instructed her to fly without using her Falcon Spirit. Ariah's heart sank. She had relied on her spirit for so long and this task seemed impossible.
"Leap," he commanded. "If you fall, it's because you are not strong enough."
Ariah hesitated, then took a deep breath and jumped. The first attempt was disastrous. She plummeted to the ground, landing hard and bruising her body. Pain shot through her ankle, and she feared she had reinjured it. The harsh laughter of the Vulture Master echoed around her.
"Pathetic," he spat. "Try again."
Over and over, Ariah leaped, only to crash down painfully each time. Her body ached, and her spirit wavered.
"What a waste. A true warrior would not fail so miserably." Her master's cruel words cut deep, which made her doubt herself.
Despite the torment, Ariah refused to give up. She pushed through the pain, trying again and again, until finally, she managed a controlled glide, landing softly on her feet. It wasn't perfect, but it was progress.
