~Previously in The Girl Who Restored My Humanity Book Three;~As Charlotte and Sophie walk ahead to get into the dark blue Chevy truck, I reluctantly walk towards the passenger side of Klaus's Audi in preparation for an intensely quiet drive to Oregon.
In the distance I hear Klaus speaking with Rebekah, likely giving her orders to wait at the Mikaelson mansion for Damon, Stefan and Alaric to return with the stakes, and as much as I try to shake this nervousness it merely continues to amplify after Charlotte's words. Why did that bother me so much? Do other people think the same thing?
In abandonment of these thoughts, I shake my head and turn away from the Mikaelson mansion to take a deep breath. This is going to be the longest night of your life.
"Let's get a move on, shall we?" Klaus announces from over my shoulder, addressing Charlotte and Sophie as they stand by the truck in front. "We'll follow your lead, just this once." Charlotte rolls her eyes then climbs into the driver's seat, and Sophie in the same fashion now also gets into the truck.
As I hear the Audi unlock, I immediately turn and get into the passenger seat of the car, hellbent on not having to share another word with Klaus.
"Ah, the silent treatment... That age-old trick." Klaus says with amusement, taking his time as he leisurely gets into the driver's seat and starts the car. "You do whatever you need to get it out of your system, love." He calmly switches on the radio with a sudden burst of confidence, and I feel myself uncontrollably squirm at the idea of us both understanding the cause of my nervousness right now. Whilst Klaus drives close behind Charlotte's truck, following her out of the driveway, I watch the Mikaelson mansion move further away in the rearview mirror. Maybe fighting on this was a bad idea.
As we head down the main road, with the Mikaelson mansion no longer visible behind us, I prepare myself as we head away from normality and into the heart of darkness.
~Ally's POV;~
1 hour on the road.
Whilst listening to the tyres of the Audi roll peacefully over the gravel of the highway, I force myself to fixate on the raindrops travelling down the window next to me instead of looking over at him. Earlier tonight, Klaus ordered Ric, Damon and Stefan to bring the last two remaining white oak stakes in exchange for letting me go. It now just occurs to me that Damon, Stefan and Ric may well have already arrived with the white oak stakes only to find that I am now missing from the Mikaelson mansion, along with both Sophie and Klaus. As I frantically retrieve my phone from my jacket pocket, I find two unread messages waiting in my inbox, one from Damon and the other from Ric. I open the first message from Damon to read:
We have a situation. Dr Jekyll hid the white oak stake but Mr Hyde has moved it. We have a plan though. We'll get you out of there as quickly as we can. I promise x
As easy as it could have been to have no idea what Damon was talking about in his message, I immediately piece together that Damon is making a dig at Alaric. Damon Salvatore: vampire and part-time comedian. Damon's words finally sink in, and I now take a moment to process them. An unsettling wave of anxiety suddenly ripples inside of my stomach, and the idea of Ric's alter ego taking the remaining white oak stake and hiding it from us makes it worse. When did he find the time to do that?
Aware that I still have an unread text message from Ric, I open it and read with a combination of uneasiness and haste:
We've run into a problem with the last white oak stake, but I'm gonna get you out of there. I'm so sorry. I'll call you later. x
A frown naturally reaches my face at Ric's apology, knowing in an instant that he feels guilty for the existence of his alter ego and his inability to stop it. He always finds a way to delegate the blame to himself.
Although I should tell Ric and Damon about this lengthy trip to Portland right away, I don't want anyone talking me out of it or preventing me from going, even if Uncle Joshua is as dangerous as he's rumoured to be. I want to know if Malachai was right about him by seeing him with my own eyes.
In avoidance of worrying Ric and Damon, however, I send the same text to both, which simply reads:
Take your time. Klaus isn't going to hurt me. I'll be okay. x
"Are you going to deliver the good news that they have my stakes?" Klaus asks from beside me, breaking the long period of quietness while keeping his eyes on the road ahead. "Or are you still resorting to silence?"
"They have one of the stakes." I answer abruptly, now returning my phone to my jacket pocket as I fold my arms across my chest. "Ric's alter ego, however, has taken it upon himself to hide the other one... They're all looking for it now as we speak." I sigh quietly to myself then look out of the window again, fearful that Bonnie's help may have come too late.
"You're worried about your father..." Klaus states pityingly from beside me, making an observation in order to continue the conversation. "His alter ego is showing his face more often than not nowadays and that scares you." Bingo. For a moment I find it frustrating how transparent I can be, especially when it comes to my friends and family, and as greatly as I want to tell Klaus that he is wrong I know that he'll see right through that too. I'm worried as hell, but I don't want to be seen as weak or without hope.
"He'll be okay." I reply with a nod of my head, reassuring myself more than Klaus. "I'll find a way of saving him."
"Oh, I wouldn't doubt it for a second, love..." Klaus responds matter-of-factly as he speeds up the car to remain close to Charlotte and Sophie. "Who knows? Maybe this Joshua bloke knows of a cure, something that may help your father before it is too late..." I never considered that.
"Yeah, maybe..." I reply while deep in thought, unsure of what to expect from meeting Joshua. "Or maybe Malachai was right about him and I'm two days away from being turned into a weapon."
"Well, if that is the case, then he'll be dead before he can lift a finger." Klaus replies sternly, his hands tightening around the wheel as he speaks. "I didn't put in tireless hard work to keep you alive all this time for some witchy imbecile to demolish it in a heartbeat." Witchy imbecile. I smirk for a second but immediately force myself to stop, refusing to humour the man that spent the evening threatening the people I care about; he doesn't deserve to have a hall pass for that. So why do you keep giving them to him? My subconscious questions, mocking me from the deepest parts of mind as I avoid acknowledging that it is the truth.
