"It's so cold. Why won't you let me out?" I pleaded, sick and tired, and stayed inside water for this long.
"The longer you're in the water, the more the other water expells from your body. You've changed too much already. This will help the sickness."
"The sickness?" My voice came out as a whine, but even the tone of it sounded wrong to me. Like it wasn't my voice to begin with.
"Humans go in that water to be given gifts. All it does is heighten what's already there. But it isn't meant for humans. It used to be a quick dunk, and that was all it took. Keeping you inside it for too long would rot you from the inside out. Your body won't process the change as well." He tried to explain, sitting next to me in the water, his body covered by his position as he sat there naked.
"Why don't you do the same?" I breathed, shuddering violently.
"I was made for that water. This is the water that I am not used to."
My shaking only grew more violent as I slipped under the water. He dove in, grabbing me and holding my head above the surface. His skin felt different and changed, and once I was able to see him again, I watched his black hair morph into this green that suited him so well. His brown eyes turned honey and green, and blue flecks were in them.
"You're a siren?" I managed, holding onto him, so I wouldn't slip again.
"Yes." He replied, keeping me above.
His webbed hands pushed my chin up, making me continue to shudder as whatever was inside me was expelled.
"It hurts." I choked out.
"I know. The first detox always does. You'll be better after. Stronger."
"I feel so different." I sobbed, my eyes blinking back the moisture as waves swept over my face, making me gasp for more air.
"I know, you will. You were changed. I am sorry." He said soothingly, his voice so deep and melodic to listen to.
"Why...why are you helping me?" I managed to ask.
"Because you survived the water. That means you do not deserve their fate." He answered, and I wanted to ask more, but I was just too tired.

I sat there naked, hugging my knees harshly to protect myself from the cold. "You said you were exiled. Why?"
"I'm a male." He answered first, "And I was born with a defect."
I blinked in confusion, not seeing how such a beautiful being could be "defective." He turned his head and pointed to a mark on his temple, one in the shape of a heart. Maybe a birth mark? "How is that a defect?"
He sighed, "I wasn't born perfect. Which means the only purpose for my existence would be pointless. Males are born to breed, which isn't necessary anyway because we're a starving species, but to have any body mark on oneself? That could transfer to your children. Making more become "defective"."
"They're a starving species." I said, repeating what he said. "Why take away their food?"
"I owe them nothing. Especially not their ability to take an innocent."
