Kabanata 42
Man
After that, I talked with his mother. . . something in me changed. I couldn't sleep that night, haunted by everything I had just learned. It felt like the ground beneath me gave way. The truth was too much. And as I sat inside the café the next day, I could barely function. I couldn't wrap my head around the reality that I am the daughter of the reason why they are no longer whole.
Even if I wasn't the one who caused it, I still carry the weight, because my mother did. And that makes me. . . part of it. I found myself crying again in the corner, my body shaking with shame. Shame wrapped itself around me like chains I couldn't break. I felt like I was drowning in it. Thinking about the many times I pushed Amare away.
Not once did I stop to consider how much he was already carrying. Not once did I think about how many times he forgave me, even without me asking for it. While I was too caught up in my own sorrow, he was carrying mine... and forgetting his own.
And now that I know everything? The guilt is unbearable. It's heavier than the opinions of everyone who's ever judged me. How can I even look at him now? Knowing that his brokenness is tied to mine? And instead of punishing me, he forgave me. He stayed. Even when he was hurting, he still made space for me.
Amare. . .
I thought I was the only one who was broken. But he was too. And still, he chose love. Still, he chose me. I was so consumed by my own pain that I failed to see the depth of his.
And then there's Mrs. Loida Acosta, Amare's mother. The woman who had every reason to hate me, to despise me, to look at me as nothing but the living proof of what tore their family apart. She could've cursed me. She could've let the bitterness pour out. But she didn't.
She stood there... and held my hands gently. Not to blame me. Not to break me. But to show me something I never expected. . .grace. There was a quiet strength in her. She didn't deny her pain, but she didn't let it harden her either.
And what broke me the most. . . was that she held back her tears—not for herself... but for me. She has lost so much. A marriage. A home. Years of peace. And still. . . she chose to forgive me. She didn't blame me for what my mother did. She chose mercy over resentment. And in that moment, I couldn't understand how someone who had been through so much could offer me something so sacred. Kindness.
I don't deserve it. I don't deserve either of them. Not Amare. Not his mother. And now I understand. . . Truth hurts the most when it finally knocks at your door. This pain, it's not just grief. It's the weight of finally seeing what others were carrying for you, while you were too blinded by your own hurt. But maybe. . . Maybe this is what real love looks like. Not the absence of pain. . . But the choice to love despite it.
I sat at the bus stop and stared blankly at everything in front of me, as if waiting for nothing.
But today, I didn't expect someone to arrive and quietly take the seat beside me. Akala ko mag isa ako ngayon.
"Are you expecting someone to arrive. . . or come back?"
Doon ako napaisip kung bakit nga ba ako paulit-ulit na bumabalik dito. Maybe I'm really expecting someone, and I'm just making excuses, telling myself that this place somehow brings me peace.
"No. . ."
"Bagong hobby?" Tata Anwar asked casually.
Even if I didn't feel like talking to anyone, I couldn't help but respond out of respect. It's hard to ignore someone whose presence gently demands honesty and kindness.
