ᴋᴇʟ ᴏɴʟʏ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ to make fun of Hero in his dumb sabre-toothed tiger outfit before Foxfire's Opening Ceremony dances started. To be fair, he looked just as ridiculous in his halcyon outfit, but in his opinion, feathers were better than basically a onesie.

He wasn't expecting to find someone crying.

She was sitting with her head in her hands alone in an empty area, her quiet sobs the only thing audible. From her gremlin costume, he could tell she was a Level One. Maybe it was just being nervous about the dance or starting at Foxfire. He was a Level Two, so he already experienced that fear. That meant he had to comfort her, didn't he?

"Hi," he said in an attempt to start a conversation.

She looked up, and he could see the tears streaking down her face. She burrowed her face back into her arms and continued crying. They were quieter now, but he could still hear them.

Kel sat down next to her, playing with his feathers. "Foxfire's not a bad place," he eventually said. "Don't let the Mentors or ability detecting scare you."

"It doesn't," she whispered, her voice shaking.

"Then why are you crying?" Being a son of an Empath, someone who could feel what others were feeling by contact with their body, probably should make him better with dealing with emotions, but he sucked at it.

She didn't say anything immediately. She lifted her head and wiped her tears away before she said, "My parents didn't come."

Kel's heart stopped. "What?"

"They didn't come... They said they were too busy, s-so they told me to go by myself..."

Kel was too stunned to say anything. Making your child go to their first Foxfire Opening Ceremony alone? Because you were too busy? That was just outrageous! Even the elven council would agree!
