ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴡᴇʀᴇ ꜱᴇᴠᴇʀᴀʟ times in Aubrey's life where she questioned if she was wasting her time with what she was doing. Simple things such as eating a meal could be questioned, or perhaps it could be major issues such as if it was a good idea to really be secretly living in an opera house, disguising herself as a phantom haunting it. When Kel came into her life as a new member of the opera house, those moments seemed to have escalated. This was one of many
"We've been practising this for hours," she told him. "Can't you get this right?"
"I'm trying," he whined, "and we only started five minutes ago!"
"But we've also been practising this for days. This isn't anything new. What is the problem?"
He huffed. "I don't know. It just... It's hard!"
Aubrey had taken the initiative to teach Kel how to sing. While the opera house prided itself in its ladies, she had no doubt that if she taught him how to sing, the owners of the opera house would be bragging about him while other opera houses would be begging him to leave for them. He already had the boyish charm that was attractive to more people than not. All he needed was the singing abilities, and he was set for life.
Of course, tutoring him wasn't as easy as she thought it would be. She thought having to hide from him would be the hardest, yet it was her admitted lack of patience that made it harder.
"Are you mad at me?" Kel asked, his voice quieter compared to the defensive tone it was before.
His voice made her calm down. "No, I'm not angry. Forgive me."
"I'll try harder," he continued as if he hadn't heard her.
Aubrey trusted that he would. Kel wanted to please his Angel of Music, the one thing he was left behind. His late parents promised his older brother fortune, they blessed his younger sister with a happy life, yet he had nothing. A measly angel who would come when he least expected it and help him was easily something to be laughed at. It could not be true in any lifetime, and it was too clear that the parents had nothing they could offer their second-oldest son, if they even wanted to offer him anything. The mere idea of it made her roll her eyes
Yet, when Kel first heard her and asked if she was the Angel of Music his parents promised, she answered that she was without hesitation. To this day, she didn't know why she didn't answer truthfully and why she felt no regret of being dishonest no matter how hard she tried to find a twinge of it, but it was too late to fix it. Now, she had a student she had to make into a talented opera singer.
"Would you like to take a break?" Aubrey asked.
"Why?" Kel questioned.
"It's your birthday, isn't it? Happy birthday, by the way." She heard the owners of the opera house talking about their new recruits before he actually arrived to the opera house. His birthday was mentioned along with others' whose birthdays she had forgotten, and she forgot about it until last month, when that was the first thing that came to her mind when she realized November was approaching.
"Thank you!" He chuckled. "I didn't think you'd actually remember."
"Of course I would remember. We've known each other for almost a year now, haven't we? Who do you take me for?"
