ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴡᴀꜱ ᴏɴᴇ thing that was certain about Aubrey, and it was that she had a cruel mouth. She had to, with what she became: a cruel, heartless creature. She was mean, and mean people deserved mean mouths. That much was obvious.
There was no reason for Kel to like ever, even without her mouth, but he did. She wasn't sure if she should feel special, or if he was just an idiot. It was probably the latter.
Aubrey didn't get why. There were things she could say that could absolutely break him. She knew him for most of her life; she knew what she could say to make him hurt. It wasn't like she was actively finding what bad things she could say to him or actually saying them. She just knew.
Sometimes, she even accidentally said them. Not the worst ones. Small ones that did get to him, that made him flinch and get uncomfortable, sad, angry, or maybe all. She never meant to say any of them, but when she did, she would watch him. She would study Kel's startled body posture and wondering if this was the moment he would stop loving her, if he would leave her and never come back.
But he never did. Kel would try to talk to her with a softer approach, the only thing he took from what she just said being that she was angry. The way he acted always got to Aubrey, making her profusely apologize for everything she said even though he kept saying he already knew she didn't mean it, and everything was okay.
Aubrey continuously wondered how he dealt with her. He knew how she acted, knew what she became, but still found it in him to treat her with respect, still had the desire to kiss her despite knowing what her mouth could say. She was terrified of getting too comfortable with this.
Everyone Aubrey ever cared about left at some point. Mari. Her father. Her mother. Basil. Sunny. Hero—with college, although she doubted they would be seeing each other often. She didn't know what would become of her and the Hooligans, whether they were just a group of weirdos sticking around in their teenage years before drifting apart once reaching adulthood, or something more.
Whatever the case was with them, Kel was going to be added to the list of people who were going to leave her. She knew it. She wasn't sure why she bothered with being in a relationship with him. It was so easy to simply say no when he confessed how he felt, so why did she say yes? Maybe it was because she was selfish and desired some sort of love, even if she knew it wouldn't last long.
Perhaps Aubrey should learn how to be nicer. Make her tongue refuse to cut through other's emotions to get to deeper parts. That could make Kel stay for longer, right? But, when she was a better person, everyone still left. It was probably just her fate to be deserted by everyone, no matter how hard she tried.
Still, it would be nice if Kel could be able to look back on their relationship and have happy memories. Aubrey doubted he would do that after leaving, but it was better than having bad memories. She didn't want to hurt him anyway. Respecting him was the least he deserved.
