trigger warning: suicideVanessa Lee shot herself in the bathroom of their house in the suburbs.
She'd stolen a pistol from the box her husband kept hidden underneath their bed and decided that her fate rested between her fingers and a trigger. Die or kill. It was a simple choice. Kill herself or kill her dear children and darling husband in cold blood. Vanessa was never one to give into the dream of life.
At fourteen, she attempted to slit her wrists. Failed.
At sixteen, she tried to drown herself in her bathtub. Failed.
Nineteen . . . nineteen was her lucky year. She fell victim to a drunk driving accident and spent weeks in the hospital with a fractured rib cage and legs. The doctors told her mother of the slightest chance of her survival and when she cried tears of agony, Vanessa smiled.
But she survived. Survived only to succumb to the traumas of The Flare at age twenty-eight where her mind diminished until it ceased to exist. She was brain dead. Yet so so full of life.
She was on the verge of giving into the virus and allowing it to corrupt the very sliver of humanity left within her. But she was going to end it before that.
She stood in front of the sink, hands gripping the ceramic edge as she stared at her reflection. Pale skin, bulky dark veins, beady eyes, she despised it. For my children. For my husband. Her finger was on the trigger and just as she pulled it, the door slithered open as a young girl, no older than six, stepped in, watching the lifeless body of Vanessa Lee collapse into a tangle of limbs.

'The dream be about fire, think, what fear can there be of fire which occurred in a dream!' Or so proclaimed by the Tibetans of Ancient Hinduism. In 2007, Ursula Voss found that higher gamma ray activity correlated with a distinctive consciousness and alertness in a dream state. Consciousness and Alertness. That's what the madmen had used to infiltrate the minds of their harvest with the most perplex of examinations. They tried several strategies: put her under a transcranial magnetic stimulation, studied cortex activity during REM, used La Berge's prospective memory theorem etc. At the end of it all, the madmen's hypothesis had been proven and all that remained was the stablest mind amongst the unstable. Stable but subordinate enough for them to trick her into a "lucid dream".
