THE LAST TIME VICTORIA HAD felt like this was when she had come to live with her aunt. She was small, but she remembered the feeling of fear and dread that had come over her. This was how she felt as she entered the ball given by the Bridgertons.

Sweat dripped down her forehead and her nervousness increased as she couldn't process all the information she was receiving at once.

While her aunt and cousin walked ahead, Victoria let herself be left behind crawling slowly instead of walking, until at this strange pace she stumbled and bumped into a solid body, but held on.

"I'm sorry," she said, brushing the unruly strands out of her distressed face.

Controlling her nerves, she froze again at the sight of the green eyes that seemed to put her in a state of extreme absorption. They certainly hypnotised her, but Victoria didn't know that the effect of theirs on Benedict was similar.

"Oh, don't worry," replied the gentleman, who felt exactly the same when he saw the lady.

The two of them stared at each other while Victoria's face wore a defiant smile, which she assumed after remembering that she didn't appreciate Benedict after finding out about his bad reputation. He, on the other hand, was enraptured by the woman he had so longed to meet again.

"Miss Fernsby," he greeted, a devious smile curling his lips.

The girl assumed an expression of shock. How did he know who she was when she had avoided getting close to him? Well, if that was possible since they hadn't met again.

"How do you know my family name?" She asked unabashedly, glaring at him angrily.

Benedict stepped back lightly, surprised by the question. He would have taken a big step backwards, but he wasn't easily shaken.

"You must forgive me, but we saw each other at the opening of the season and my sister Eloise always tells me who the new arrivals are," he explained as Victoria stared at him.

Victoria didn't know what to say. Benedict, someone he didn't even know well, had tried to find out who she was? What did that mean?

At that moment, she wished she had more experience with relationships, even if it was as a spectator, so that she could have some idea of where her situation fitted in.

"Forgiven, Mr Bridgerton. I already knew who you were," she replied in a serious voice. "Now, if you'll excuse me."

As soon as Victoria walked away, Benedict tried unsuccessfully to find words to describe the unusual encounter, he could only laugh. Of course, she loathed him for his previous reputation, but most men in society were like that, so perhaps she was the one who was too innocent.
