𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐑AFTER VICTORIA HAD LEAVE Benedict alone with his thoughts or whatever he had inside his soft head, she felt free to go to one of the tables full of fruit and other sweets at the ball.
She walked quickly to the table with some difficulty because of her long, pompous beige dress. She didn't mind, but she knew that she was one of the most beautiful women at the ball and she also knew that she would have suitors and that she would disappoint them all when she revealed that she didn't want to get married any time soon.
She finally arrived at her destination, feeling that sugar would help her more than trying to restore the calm expression she displayed to her family and society.
Carefully, she removed her glove and with the same hand picked up a bunch of grapes which she began to eat quietly, all she wanted at the moment was not to be interrupted or disturbed and she hoped that Benedict Bridgerton would be sensitive enough not to speak to her for at least eternity.
The sweet flavour of the fruit couldn't erase the resentment she felt towards him; if asked, she would readily reply that her contempt for him remained intact.
"It's a brilliant ball, don't you think?" A strong voice asked, causing Victoria to choke on the fruit she was eating.
"Um, certainly, Mr Kirby," she agreed, greeting the man she had met a few days earlier and recovering from her choking.
Gently wiping her hand on one of the napkins folded on the table, she put her glove back on and resumed the conversation.
"I feel that the Bridgertons specialise in giving attractive balls," she commented without emotion.
The man arched an eyebrow, an attitude she decided to ignore.
"I agree, and they're all so nice. My brother liked this place so much that I could leave him alone here," she replied, showing the empty seat to her left, which Victoria hadn't realised was vacant until now.
"It's great that he's freeing himself, but I understand your feelings, society can be scary sometimes," she said sombrely.
The man smiled openly.
"But not so much when there are lovely, kind people like your family."
She nodded and smiled, knowing that the man was referring to Jill.
"If the youngsters are having fun, what do you say we dance too?" She invited happily.
She nodded without saying anything else and reached for his hand as she felt ready enough to forget her conversation with Benedict earlier.
After a while, she said goodbye to Igor because she had been away from her family long enough.
"Where have you been?" Jill exclaimed worriedly about her cousin's disappearance when she finally found her.
