The night was still, the only sound the soft rustle of the leaves outside their bedroom window. Emma lay beside Austin, her breathing steady and calm as she drifted into a deep sleep. But soon, her dreams took a dark turn.

Emma was seven years old again, standing on the edge of a dock. The sky was overcast, and the water beneath her feet was choppy. Her parents were there, laughing and carefree, about to embark on what was supposed to be a fun boating trip. She watched as they boarded the small boat, waving at her from the deck. Then, suddenly, the boat capsized, and chaos ensued. She heard her mother’s terrified scream and her father’s desperate cries for help. The water swallowed them whole, and she stood there, helpless and paralyzed with fear.

In her sleep, Emma whimpered and began to thrash, her face contorted with distress. Austin, sensing her turmoil, stirred and reached out to her. "Emma, sweetheart, wake up," he murmured, gently shaking her.

Emma bolted upright, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Tears streamed down her face, and she trembled uncontrollably. Austin immediately wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close.

"Shh, it's okay, I'm here," he whispered, stroking her hair. "It was just a bad dream."

Emma clung to him, her body shaking with sobs. "It was so real, Austin. I was there, back when my parents died. I saw it all over again."

Austin held her tighter, his heart aching for her. "I'm so sorry, Emma. That must have been terrifying."

She nodded, her tears soaking his shirt. "I haven't had that dream in years. It felt like I was reliving it, every awful moment."

He kissed the top of her head, his voice soothing and steady. "You're safe now, Emma. I'm right here with you, and I won't let anything happen to you."

Slowly, Emma's breathing began to calm, her sobs subsiding into soft sniffles. "I just miss them so much sometimes," she whispered. "I wish they could see the life we've built, how happy we are."

Austin gently lifted her chin, looking into her eyes. "I believe they can see us, Emma. I think they’re watching over you and are incredibly proud of the strong, amazing woman you’ve become."

Emma managed a small smile through her tears. "Thank you, Austin. I don't know what I’d do without you."

"You'll never have to find out," he said firmly, kissing her forehead. "We'll get through everything together."

He continued to hold her, whispering comforting words until she finally began to relax. Gradually, the tension left her body, and she started to feel safe and secure in his arms.

"Do you think you can try to go back to sleep?" he asked gently.

Emma nodded. "I think so. Just stay close, please."

"Always," Austin promised, lying back down and pulling her close. "I'm right here."

They lay there together, Austin's arms wrapped protectively around Emma, until she finally drifted back to sleep. He stayed awake for a while longer, making sure her breathing was steady and calm before allowing himself to rest.

In the morning, as the first light of dawn filtered through the curtains, Emma woke feeling more at peace. She turned to Austin, who was still holding her, and kissed his cheek. "Thank you for being my rock," she whispered.

Austin smiled, his eyes still heavy with sleep. "Anytime, sweetheart. We'll face the nightmares together, just like we do everything else."

Emma snuggled closer to him, feeling the warmth of his love and support. With Austin by her side, she knew she could face anything, even the darkest shadows of her past.
