On my way home from school, I decide to take a shortcut through the woods. While walking, I hear not just one, but two sets of distinct footsteps. I quicken my pace, only to realize that the footsteps are following me, so I began running before halting to listen for footsteps; however, the only sound was my own breathing. After a brief pause, I honed the listening skills taught by my parents.
About 25 feet away, the snap of a twig breaking spurred me to sprint at full speed to the fence encircling my backyard. I flung my backpack over the fence, then dashed to the nearest tree. Climbing halfway up, I propelled myself from the tree, executing a backflip to vault over the fence and landing in my backyard and yes, I did a black widow landing. As I raised my head, I saw two individuals standing before me, both wearing all black with a mask.
"Look, I don't know who either of you are, but I know how to fight," I declared, rising to my feet and assuming a fighting stance.
Without a word, they reached up and removed their masks. As their faces were revealed, a smile spread across mine. I walked towards them, then broke into a run, enveloping my parents in the biggest hug.
"Someone missed us," said my dad, Jim, as he lifted me up to carry me on his back.
"Aww, my baby boy was worried about us," said my mom, Nikki, as we walked back to the house.
"Well, you guys have been gone for about a week," I stated as we reached the back door.
"NO MITTENS BAD MITTENS." Mrs. Johnson our neighbor screamed at her cat who was clawing at her socks.
We all suddenly burst into laughter, and then my dad set me down to open the back door. Upon entering, they headed upstairs to change their clothes, while I made my way to the kitchen to begin my homework. After 30 minutes my parents came downstairs, my mom went to the fridge and started to make a snack for all of us. My dad sat down next to me and started to help me with homework. After another 10 minutes I was done with my homework just as soon as my mom got done making the snack.
"Hey little man" my dad said which caught my attention.
"Yes" I said as looked at him.
"Show me that report card," my dad said, imitating Steve Harvey's distinctive tone from Family Feud.
As my mom initiated a drum roll, I delved into my bookbag, retrieved my binder, and then unveiled my report card, eliciting a 'ding' sound in the process. The room erupted in cheers. My dad, beaming with pride, then passed the report card to my mom.
"My son is smart; I wonder where he gets that from," said Dad.
"Not you, Jay," my mom said as she winked at me.
"Well, he got my looks" my dad said mocking her.
As Mom began to speak, both of their watches started flashing red. They glanced at their watches, then at each other, and exchanged a subtle nod. My dad abruptly stood up, and my mom hurried upstairs. Peering out the window, my dad then moved to inspect the view from the living room. I had never seen my parents act in such a frantic manner, which was unsettling. As I rose to approach the window, my dad gestured for me to stop.
Just then my mom descended the stairs, holding two black bookbags, while my dad fetched additional bags from the living room one of them being my school bookbag. He started filling them with water bottles and food the from the kitchen. A knock at front door caught my attention. I moved to answer it, but with each step the air got thinner, and my heart was pounding. I stopped in front of the door and reached for the doorknob, a sudden bang against the door made me recoil. Shaking off the apprehension, I reached for the doorknob once more.
"NO, DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!" my dad screamed, then turned and looked out into the backyard.
Which caused me to jump back a bit almost tripping on a pair of my play shoes. Why? What's happening? Why is he behaving this way? Why did their watch start flashing red? I was just standing there, becoming increasingly confused by everything that was unfolding, and asking myself these questions didn't help at all.
" Alex? ALEX" My mom said which caused me to look over at her and almost take a step back.
"Y-Yes mom?" I said with a confused look.
"Come on your dad is waiting for us" she said while looking around.
I followed her as she began to lead me out the back door, utilizing my hearing technique I became aware of everything happening, including all the screaming, and gunshots The noise grew louder and louder, and as we reached the backyard, a smell assaulted my nostrils, a stench reminiscent of death.
I notice My dad standing there urging us to dash into the woods and not to stop for anything unless he said so. We dashed deep into the woods and eventually halted. My dad approached a tree stump, followed by my mom. He bent down, and a scanner read his eye. Then my mom placed her hand on the stump, and it scanned her hand as well. The top of the stump opened, revealing an array of weapons inside.
"Alex, grab that bag right there, hand it to me, and put on what's in the other bag," my mom said nodding towards the bags.
I gave her the bag, then opened the other one, revealing an outfit accompanied by black boots with a watch like theirs and a ring with a big A. I wonder what is going on they still haven't explained to me what's going. So, I'll have to wait until they have a moment to slow down and actually talk to me, instead of just giving orders. After I finished dressing in the outfit, I approached my mother, who began to equip me with daggers and throwing knives.
She grabbed a bow from the stump and handed it to me. She turned around and walked up to a tree and used a key to open a lock hole that is located on the tree. She reached inside tree and retrieved what appeared to be two sticks. Unveiling them, they were actually two katanas, she placed one on my back and handed the other to my father. Finally, she took her two Glocks and fastened them at her side. I glanced at my mom, then at my dad, smiled We are one cool family. Once everyone finished preparing for whatever it was, I seized the moment to ask my parents what was happening.
"Mom Dad what is go----" I was interrupted by a twig snapping behind me.
I spun around to see a man passing by. He halted and glanced in our direction and shock sent me tumbling to the ground as I noticed a human hand in his mouth. But before he could advance, a sound pierced the air, reminiscent of a quiet laser from a video game. I looked back to find my mother, gun poised, a silencer affixed.
"The New World is happening," she said as she lowered her gun.
