Moonkit and her siblings ran around the River Clan camp. Lightningkit and Moonkit were racing from the nursery to the apprentices den with Silverkit calling behind them. "I, SilverStar make you into apprentices. Whoever gets to the den quicker, becomes an apprentice first!" He meowed in a giggly impression of a clan leader.

Moonkit flicked her whiskers to make sure she didn't run into the branch that stuck from ground at the entrance of the apprentice den. As she neared the den, a lovely scent of flowers hit her nose. "Mrr-Ooww!" Lightningkit squealed. Moonkit turned around in surprise. She padded towards his voice. "Lightningkit?" she meowed, "Are you alright?" she asked. But to her surprise, Lightningkit meowed from the entrance of the apprentice's den.

"Alright? I'm great! I just won the race!" he snickered. Moonkit bristled and her tail lashed. She was about to protest but Rainkit beat her to it. The blue-gray kit ran towards them. "Hey!" they meowed indignantly. "That wasn't fair! Moonkit would have won but Lightningkit was sneaky! I bet he's Shadow Clan, Silverstar!"

Moonkit giggled, she appreciated Rainkit sticking up for her and still continuing the game. "I, Silverstar, declare that Rainkit and Moonkit will become apprentices for exposing the Shadow Clan warrior!" Silverkit mewed. Moonkit chuckled and pounced towards an unsuspecting Lightningkit. "Haha!" she meowed, turning Lightningkit onto his belly and raking sheathed paws over him. "Got you, Shadow Clan." She said as she leapt off her sibling. "Oh, no! I am captured." Lightningkit mewed in submission.

"Since you caught the Shadow Clan warrior, you two become my deputies. Moonglow and Raincloud!" Silverkit meowed as he jumped on a small stone. The other kits bowed to him before Moonkit jumped up. "Yay!" She mewed, "We're deputies! I'm Moonglow."

Rainkit nodded and yawned, "I'm tired after the game, I'm going to rest in the nursery now." After the kits walked back towards the nursery, Moonkit got an idea.

"I'm Moonstar! The leader of River Clan!" She meowed, excitedly. Silverkit bowed low. "Oh, Moonstar, our incredible leader!" he meowed. Moonkit smiled at her brothers, "My Highrock is the top of the nursery."

And the kits attempted to climb the neatly woven willow branches of the nursery. Ultimately, both Moonkit and Lightningkit got stung from the nettle leaves that covered the entrance. Moonkit was the only one to get a good claw hold on the nursery wall.

Moonkit was sat on the top of the nursery, her whiskers twitching. She could hear Lightningkit was still having trouble scaling the side of the nursery. Moonkit heard Silverkit grunting on the ground, as he tried and failed to get a claw hold. She scented Rainkit dawdling by the entrance. Moonkit guessed that her cautious sibling was confused at what the kits were doing.

Suddenly, Moonkit felt her heart drop. She scented Mistyfoot, back from a morning hunt, returning to the nursery. Moonkit heard fresh prey drop from Mistyfoot's jaws and splat onto the floor.

"What in the name of Star Clan, are you doing?!" she screeched. "Moonkit, Lightningkit! Why are you on the nursery?" She didn't wait for them to answer before continuing. "Get down, before the den collapses!" She meowed angrily. "Midnightfur wouldn't want you putting yourself in danger!" Her voice softened. "Especially you, Moonkit." She heard Mistyfoot pick up her prey and trot inside the nursery.

Moonkit sighed and jumped down from the top of the den. Silverkit fell into step next to Lightningkit and Moonkit. "Sorry." he whispered. "It was my idea, you don't need to say sorry," Moonkit mewed back.

Lightningkit hissed, annoyed. "Why did you have to do that? Now we're both in trouble," he whispered angrily. Moonkit flicked her tail in irritation. I wasn't trying to get us into trouble! Moonkit wasn't to meow back.

As the kits stepped into the nursery, Moonkit braced herself for an explosion. But it didn't come. Midnightfur reeked of anger towards her kits, but she spoke calmly. "Lightningkit... Moonkit, why did you climb the nursery wall?" Moonkit drooped her tail in shame. "It-it was my idea. I was pretending I was a clan leader a-and the nursery was my Highrock."

Midnightfur sighed loudly. "Moonkit, you are five moons old. I expect you to be more careful in future," she meowed, with irritation in her voice. "Lightningkit, Rainkit and Silverkit. Next time I expect you to protect your sister and help her more."

Moonkit tilted her head in confusion. "Er... I- it was my idea, though. You don't need to tell the others off." she mewed, cautiously. "But I do. Your siblings should have told you not to climb the nursery. You need extra care because you can't see," Midnightfur meowed, icily. "Now, it is time for you kits to go to sleep."

Normally, Moonkit would argue but today she just nodded, wearily. Can't see? What does 'seeing' mean? Moonkit thought to herself.

As the full moon rose, the stars of Silverpelt glinted in the moonlight.

Not that Moonkit had noticed the sky, even if she had been outside the nursery that night. But, if she had, she would have enjoyed the cool, misty breeze that always came with the moonglow.

In the nursery, Moonkit flicked her tail with uncertainty, it had been an odd conversation. She was never sure why the older cats seemed to make more of a fuss over her, than the other kits. It had been happening more and more, lately. Just a few days ago, she had dropped a fish she was bringing to her mother. Moonkit was already bending to pick it up when Stonefur ordered Reedkit to carry it the rest of the way.

It didn't make sense. The kits were all very similar. They all had whiskers, ears and paws. What was so different about her? Moonkit was a she-cat. But why would the other cats act strange around her? Primrosekit, Mistyfoot's daughter, wasn't treated so oddly.

Moonkit listened intently around her mother's nest. Midnightfur and the other kits were sleeping. Moonkit wasn't particularly tired but there wasn't much to do without her siblings awake too.

She closed her eyes and fell into sleep.
