It had been about a moon since rogues attacked RiverClan.
Suddenly, Moonkit was shaken awake. "Wake up, little Moon!" Midnightfur mewed, sweetly. "Today is the day!" she whispered. A second later, Moonkit sat up, all grogginess forgotten. Today she was going to become an apprentice!
After she had woken up the other kits, Midnightfur hastily pushed them out of the nursery. She careful licked each kit, smoothing their fur. "Good luck, Rainkit and Moonkit! Have fun Lightningkit. Try to learn something, Silverkit." Midnightfur meowed after she had finished grooming the kits.
Moonkit heard her mother drop two pieces of prey in front of the kits. "I might not be around so much. But, I'm so proud of all of you!" Midnightfur continued. Moonkit purred and nuzzled into her mother's fur.
As Lightningkit bit, noisily, into a fish, Moonkit could faintly hear Crookedstar and Leopardfur talking in a whispered conversation. "...she can't be!" Leopardfur meowed. "my mother was-" Crookedstar began, "Nightbloom was only half blind after she had you! Its why she switched to medicine," Leopardfur interrupted. "what about that then? she might still bring peace!" Crookedstar meowed, angrily. Moonkit heard Leopardfur meow something, indistinctly.
Moonkit shook herself. What could they be talking about? she thought. They couldn't be talking about me... Right? But my ceremony is today! But I'm just a kit, surely they are just discussing some important clan stuff. Moonkit decided. But her fur prickled, and subconsciously she knew what they had been discussing. Moonkit finished the last bite of her fish to chase the thoughts from her mind.
"Let all cats old enough to swim, gather beneath the Highrock for a clan meeting!" Crookedstar called from his place on large rock, surrounded by a thin moat. "Let's go, it's time," Midnightfur mewed softly, as she shuffled to stand up. Midnightfur grasped Moonkit in her jaws to carry her. Normally Moonkit would insist on walking, but this was her last chance to be carried.
"Today, three kits are six moons old and are ready to be apprenticed," Crookedstar meowed. Moonkit heard gasps in the crowd and scented uncertainty wafting from the cats. It's Silverkit! H-he's going to be a medicine cat so he w-will have a separate ceremony. Moonkit reasoned to herself, but she already had a sinking feeling in her chest.
"Firstly, is our next medicine cat." Moonkit felt her heart drop. "Silverkit, you have reached six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your full name, you will be known as Silverpaw. Your mentor will be Mudfur, and you will be trained as a medicine cat. I hope they will pass down all they know on to you, Silverpaw." Crookedstar continued.
"Mudfur, you were the apprentice of Nightbloom, and you have proven yourself to be a capable medicine cat. I expect you to pass on all you know to Silverpaw." Crookedstar finished.
M-maybe its Rainkit! Yes, t-they... um... are more shy and cautious. Moonkit thought, frantically.
"Lightningkit, you are the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed. From this day forth, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be called Lightningpaw. You will be apprentice to Loudbelly. I hope Loudbelly will pass along all of their knowledge to you, Lightningpaw." Crookedstar continued.
"Loudbelly, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You received excellent training from Oakheart and have shown yourself to be loyal and just. As his mentor, I hope you pass on all you know to Lightningpaw."
Moonkit sat up hopefully. "Rainkit." Crookedstar meowed. Moonkit barely listened as Rainkit became apprentice to Whitecloud. It felt like the world had crashed down, in Moonkit's mind. Not an apprentice... Moonkit thought, miserably. Will I stay in the nursery forever? Taking care of the elders until I join them? It was a horrible thought.
And Moonkit remembered Shiningstar's words from her dream. Surely, I will have somesort of destiny... Surely! ... Right?
"Come, Moonkit," Midnightfur mewed, sadly. But Moonkit felt rooted to the spot where she sat. Perhaps if sat there forever, eventually Crookedstar would make her into an apprentice. "N-no..." Moonkit mumbled. "I-I can't... I," she mewed, quietly. Midnightfur groomed her sympathetically. "It's alright, Moonkit." Midnightfur meowed, "I'm sure-" she began. "No." Moonkit interrupted. "It isn't fair. I need to talk to Crookedstar."
Moonkit scented her mother's uncertainty, "I'm not sure if that's a good idea, little Moon," Midnightfur began. "No, I need to know Mama," Moonkit mewed decisively. Midnightfur tried to pick up Moonkit by her scruff, but Moonkit dug her claws into the ground. Midnightfur sighed in resignation. "I suppose I cannot stop you," she meowed. "Just remember your manners, you're talking to a clan leader. I'll wait for you outside of the nursery," Midnightfur meowed as she padded away.
Moonkit took a deep breath and shuffled to her paws. Moonkit twitched her whiskers to make sure she didn't bump into anyone as she stepped towards the leader's den. The shallow strip of water whistled as it flowed in front of the den entrance.
Moonkit scented Leopardfur stationed outside the leader's den. The deputy sighed, "Moonkit... Crookedstar has been expecting you," she mewed, flatly.
Flicking her tail in confusion, Moonkit entered the den.
