WARREN HALE

Have a good night, mate. That's what she'd said on the phone last night. I would have laughed if I wasn't surprised to hear that Cecily had swapped her phone with a random woman when she was at the airport to pick me up. The woman was as meticulous and careful as they came so it was a slight shock to me that she had allowed such a slip-up to take place.

"Yes, I am." The woman nodded, fidgeting with the hem of her leather jacket. She seemed out of place in the lobby, her lovely features dimming as she looked around. The air around her seemed to ripple with awkwardness.

"Did you find Cecily?" I questioned, looking around in an attempt to find my assistant. She shook her head, making me turn back to her.

"S-she is currently on her way down," She said and I realized that was what Vance, the receptionist, had been telling her when I arrived.

"Alright. I hope you find your phone." Giving her a brief nod, I walked away, her grey eyes following me with an unreadable expression in them. I didn't bother to dissect the emotion because it was none of my business.

Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I opened my text messages to find three new texts waiting for me from my brother, Miles. Right beneath his texts were several others from our oldest brother, Everett.

I rolled my eyes as I clicked on Miles' text chain, going through the messages quickly and reverting back to him.

Warren:

I am not coming to meet mom and dad. Not now. Not ever.

You guys need to get off my back.

I am not meeting with our parents nor with the woman you've convinced to marry me.

The moment the messages were delivered, three bubbles started dancing on the screen. I was convinced my brothers had nothing better to do than try to make my life as miserable and unhappening as theirs.

Miles:

Everett has already threatened to kidnap you if you don't do as we tell you to.

Moreover, hear mom and dad out once. You might like Kate. She's a beautiful and lovely girl.

Warren:

No.

I clicked out of the app as I stepped onto the elevator to take me to the floor my office was on. I looked up from my phone, spotting the woman in the lobby looking around, her eyes wide with wonder. Her hands were in the back pockets of her shorts as she watched people walk in and out of the elevators and the revolving doors of the building. I often forgot that not everyone lived the way I did and that some of our worlds were so far apart, it was hard to even run into each other by chance.

As the elevator doors began to close, her gaze found mine. Her hair blew into her face momentarily as the revolving doors opened beside her, covering her features except for her eyes. She blinked at me, no emotions filling them. Just as the door fully closed, a shiver ran down my spine.

The woman in the lobby, I'd seen her before. A moment later, I realized where. She was the one who had attempted to kill me all those weeks ago.

Fuck.

._._._.

"Are you sure?" Everett's deep voice sounded skeptical of me. Of course it did.

"I am sure." I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I want nothing to do with this arrangement. Or mom and dad." I added. This was a conversation I had had a thousand times already but it seemed as if my brothers didn't truly understand English when I spoke it.
