The headset

"DAD!" I called, my voice echoing through our worn-down house, running down the old stairway with something in my hand.

"What is it, honey?" My father called back, the smell of bacon wafting from the kitchen, along with the sound of sizzling, giving the room an air of coziness.

"I found this weird package on my bed when I came out of the bathroom, you know my birthday's not until next month, right?" I said, putting a crumpled-looking parcel down on the dining table., which already had a variety of food on it. Dad smiled over at me, and said in his classic joking tone, "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought it was today! My bad, sweetie."

I laughed a bit, and rolled my eyes. "So you really don't know what it is?" I asked him, sitting down. He came over with the bacon, the smell making my mouth water. "Not a clue. How about this; we eat breakfast, I'll go to work, then you can open it and see what it is. If you like it, keep it, if not, then we can donate it."

I smiled at him, and nodded. "Sounds like a plan." My stomach suddenly rumbled, making us both laugh. "Well, dig in." My father told me, and we sat down to bacon, eggs, waffles, and (favorite food).

When I was done, I put my dishes in the sink, grabbed the package off the table, shouted "See you tonight, Dad!" and ran back upstairs, eager to open the mystery gift.

As I sat on my bed, I grabbed a pair of scissors, and started to cut at the brown paper around it. I felt them collide with something metal, and paused, deciding I could rip the rest. The brown layer fell away to reveal an old-looking headset, looking like the kind of technology you'd find if tech existed in the 1800s.

I scanned it for a moment, before I saw the part the scissors had chipped off; it seemed like it was only a bit of the paint, so it probably still worked well enough. I noticed a logo on the front, a blue circle with a white "C&A" printed on. I shrugged it off, and heard my dad call "Bye, sweetie! See you tonight!"

"Bye!" I yelled back, "Don't forget your glasses!" He just chuckled, and then I heard the door close and lock. Finally, I was all alone, and ready to test out this weird, rusty junk that probably didn't work anyways. I slipped it on, pressed the power button, and immediately felt my soul slipping out of my body. I tried to take off the headset, but it was too late- I was already stuck inside. No returning to my peaceful, 21 year old life, no hope of escaping, no way out.
