A few months had passed since I joined this whole wacky world, and I'd started getting pretty comfortable. Me and Jax were still fighting... a decent amount... but everyone else was surprisingly easy to get along with. I was now almost 100% sure that Pomni and Ragatha liked each other, but they violently denied it if I asked either of them about it. Kinger was... Kinger... and Gangle had been getting better about keeping her comedy mask safe (AKA been better at hiding from Jax) while Zooble continued to dodge any adventures. Sometimes I joined them, but not usually.
"Aaaaaalright! Today's adventure is... Cakey Cut-outs!" Caine shouted, seeming as joyful as always, but everyone else looked confused, and listened to him keep rambling.
"Thaaaat's right, you'll be allowed to bake freely in the kitchen today, and will be partnered up with this randomizing generator!" Suddenly, a machine fell from the ceiling. It was red and yellow, with a blue button in the middle that said "RAND".
"Press the button to see who's getting paired with who!" Caine looked and sounded as excited as always, but Pomni raised her hand hesitantly. "Uh.. Caine? Why does the button just say 'rand' on it?"
Caine paused, and glanced over to the machine, then said quickly, "There wasn't space for the rest." Before anyone could say anything else, he yelled, "And one more surprise... I'm joining you on this adventure!!!"
Zooble, for the first time, actually looked shocked, and so did Kinger. I'm not sure how they looked shocked, as the only thing that changed was their eyes, but Kinger asked, "So we'll have an even number of people? I call Gangle for this!"
Caine chuckled. "Kinger, the partners are randomized. But don't worry, you can change partners if you really want to. The only rules are 'try your best', and 'you can't work alone'! Gooood luck, my little superstars!"
Jax groaned, obviously irritated that he couldn't just do everything himself. "Ugh, do we have to do this?" He asked, glaring up at the ringmaster. "Yes you do, Jax, now somebody press the button."
I sighed, but stepped up, and pressed the blue button. The machine started whirring, then suddenly, a picture of me and Jax appeared. "Alright, Y/n, you're working with Jax!" "Alright, I guess I can get behind that." I replied, and Jax sighed. "At least I'm working with someone remotely competent..." He muttered, and I just raised my eyebrow. "Was that a compliment or an insult?"
"Both."
"...yeah that makes sense. Caine, I don't think I've ever been to the kitchen before, where is it?" I asked, but to my surprise, Jax just grabbed my arm and walked in a direction, so I let him drag me along, falling into step beside him.
"I'm not doing !@ 🎩#$, you do it." He growled into my ear, and I glared up at him. "Excuse me? No, I can't do everything. I mean, I'll help, of course, but I'm not doing all of it." I retorted, and he rolled his eyes. "Does it look like I care? No, now go bake." He then shoved me towards the oven, I hadn't even noticed we had gotten into the kitchen.
"Fine, jack!@ 🎩#$, but I'm not giving you any credit." "Didn't ask you to." "Just get me the ingredients at least." "FINE." Jax stormed off, and surprisingly, got me exactly what a cake needs. I started on the mixing ingredients, and shortly after, Ragatha and Pomni came in, blushing a bit.
"Hey, sorry about the wait, Caine accidentally broke the machine so we had to wait while he fixed it." Ragatha told us, and went over to another baking station, out of mine and Jax's sight. After around five minutes, Caine popped in, and yelled, "I ALMOST FORGOT, YOU NEED TO MAKE THE CAKES INTO EITHER YOURSELVES OR OBJECTS, NO REGULAR CAKES!!" He then disappeared again, and Jax said quietly, "You're carving me from that cake." 'Wha- no. If you want me to do the whole thing, I'm gonna decide what I make." I responded, mixing the cake batter.
"UGH, FINE, I'll help." Jax grumbled, and grabbed some more of the ingredients, and started making more cake batter. A few minutes passed in silence, and finally, I said quietly, "You make me, and I'll make you, deal?"
He sighed, and replied, "How about a painting. You do the carving, I do the "painting" out of edible paint. I'm good enough at colour matching..." I glanced up at him, a bit surprised he actually offered to do something, and nodded. "Alright."
(Timeskip because I'm too lazy also my computer is at 15%)
I stepped back, and looked over our work. Jax had actually been decent at doing the painting of us, with me just standing beside him, an awkward smile on my face, and he was using me as a wall, looking smug as usual, his arm on my shoulder, and his other hand making the peace sign.
(This is the pose I was imagining but Jax made it in colour, for anyone who found that unclear. Also, yes, this is my art.)
"Woah, Jax, you never told me you could paint..." I murmured, slightly in awe of his skills.
"It's nothing." He replied, unhappy with his work, and started fixing up some minor details I hadn't even seen. Suddenly, Caine popped in again, and shouted, "BUBBLE'S REFEREEING, MY LITTLE FURBY INCARNATES! ALSO TIME'S UP!!!" then disappeared. Jax rolled his eyes, and stopped fixing the cake, but it looked amazing either way.
Time to judge!
As we all gathered on stage, Bubble came out with four pedestals (somehow) and four cakes. Ragatha and Pomni's cake was a carving of Pomni, and it was actually quite good. Next up, what I assumed was Zooble and Gangle's cake, was a small toy box, half open, a red ribbon wrapping around the bottom of it. Caine and Kinger's cake was... surprisingly detailed. It was a mini Caine playing even more mini chess against himself, and Kinger looked quite proud of himself.
"I carved out all the little chess pieces." He said to me, and I smiled up at him. "They look great, I feel like I could almost use them." I replied, and Kinger smiled at me with his eyes. Last, was mine and Jax's cake, which felt kinda bad compared to everyone else's, but all the others looked more impressed than they did for the first cakes.
"Wow, Y/n, did you do that all by yourself? I can't imagine Jax helped you at all..." Ragatha asked, and I shook my head. "Actually, Jax did the painting and some of the batter." I told her, and she looked surprised.
"Really? He's never done anything to help out before..." She added to herself, but before I could respond, Bubble floated up in front of everyone and, in his screechy voice, shouted, "I shall now taste the cakes!"
He flew over to Ragatha and Pomni's cake first, and bit off the carving's hat. "Mmmmm, delicious! And detailed!" Then came the toy box, of which came a similar remark, and the chess set, and then mine and Jax's. I felt a bit anxious as Bubble ate the top part of the cake first. "Oooh... Cakey... and spectacular!" He declared, and suddenly, me and Jax were on the stage.
"You two win the competition!" He yelled, and everyone clapped. I smiled, and took a slight bow, as Jax just smirked.
"Of course we won, I had full confidence..." Jax muttered, and I said quietly, "Shut it, Bunny Boy, you were panicking as the other cakes came out."
"Yeah yeah yeah, whatever." He replied softly, rolling his eyes, and continuing to smile.
