As Spencer, DuBuis, Andrew and Glory ate the hearty breakfast of fried eggs, turkey bacon , turkey sausage and Glory's homemade bread at the kitchen table they tried their level best to ignore the banging and yelling coming from upstairs.
" So ," Andrew said," Glory and I are going to look at that rental house today. If it looks good and is a reasonable rent we'll probably just put down a security and first month rent right then. No reason to wait around or haggle. "
Glory agreed. " And we'll need to head back to Pennsylvania to pack up our things for here. Or .... Maybe we can have Dodie and her family bring them down one weekend in an U-Haul. I would love for them to see Maryland and meet you all. You'll like Dodie. She used to be a elementary school teacher but now she stays home and teaches her kids and does volunteer work. Oh she's always so productive. "
Andrew smiled. " She gets that from her mother. " Suddenly from upstairs they heard what sounded like Theodore yelping like a wounded dog. " I think it's a good idea to get started on the rental and head home to pack up. Then come back to move in the new place. I need to check on the store too. Although the staff is extremely capable. "
They heard what sounded like a shoe hitting the wall upstairs.
DuBuis rubbed his forehead and thought that he would love to sneak back to Pennsylvania with his inlaws right now.
Spencer pushed his glasses back on his face. He was ignoring his breakfast because he was engrossed in a book he had downloaded on his phone through Libby. It was called How To Raise Preteens And Teens In A Hectic World. " Aren't you going to the doctor for the physical exam Reverend Lynn wanted, sweetie? ," he asked his husband as he tried to ignore what sounded like world war three erupting upstairs. He did so hate conflict.
DuBuis was currently regretting having poured out the whiskey he had hidden in the bathroom. " What? Oh yeah. That is today. Then I have another shift. "
Suddenly they heard a pair of footsteps racing down the stairs followed by another set.
Luci ran giggling into the kitchen, holding up Theodore's large black framed glasses in the air.
Theodore chased after her wearing what looked like a long silky kimono bathrobe and a towel around his wet blond hair. He was shouting and pointing a finger at her.
" Luci ! ," DuBuis snapped. " Give that boy back his glasses ! Now ! "
Spencer said while still reading," Theodore, you need to effectively use your words to communicate. That's what it says right here in Chapter Two. "
Andrew and Glory looked at each other.
Then there was a knock at the front door.
Andrew almost broke his leg leaving the very noisy kitchen to answer the door.
He was very concerned when he saw the rumpled older detective in the wrinkled suit and scruffed shoes on the porch with an uniformed officer behind him. " Yes ? May I help you? ," he asked with a sinking heart.
The detective smiled faintly. " You can help by moving out the way. I'm Nate Jacks with homicide. I'm still looking into the beating and shooting of Skip Sands and I'm searching this house. Today. "
Andrew pursed his lips. He narrowed his eyes. He might be disbarred but he was still a lawyer. " Do you have a warrant, Detective Jacks ? "
Jacks smiled even wider. " Of course we do. We're not amateurs. "
With a flourish he waved a paper in front of Andrew's face. " There's your warrant. Read it. Enjoy it. Review it for grammar. "
